I would think it would be easier to get services under ASD than Asperger's which is specifically omitted from a lot of services relating to autism. I mean, the whole system is collapsing so nothing is easier. I dunno, I've never seen any benefit to the Asperger's label, it's an ugly name and one a lot of people don't take very seriously for whatever reason.

I agree! I don't like the Aspergers label, because my autism is milder than what is considered as AS, but I would be diagnosed as Aspergers anyway, and that's why I prefer the DSM-5 to previous manuals.
PS: I loved the obituary! I like that kind of sarcasm soooo much!!

I can understand your confusion!

Your post might be better placed in a thread of its own in this General Autism Discussion forum, ideally with a title that will alert people to the clarification you are seeking, so that you will get targeted responses and your new thread (if titled well) will bring up footnotes at the bottom of the same page that show you past discussions on the same topic.

This thread was really meant for entertainment, though I can see why you posted here. If you copy the text of your post here, you could post it as an opening post in your new thread.

Thanks. Maybe I'll do that. I didn't really come to this forum for advice on the matter, but that's what came up when i read this thread. Its only mostly dead!

Why is it a bad thing to move all DXs to ASD as we now know it is one spectrum

It made a bad situation worse. The DSM IV made a mistake in making Aspergers a seperate diagnosis in the first place. It should have been a subcatagory. Aspergers was a very helpful explination for autistic people that were not prevoiusly recognized many of us for decades. It caused problems also. While Aspergers was recognized as part of the spectrum in my view because the diagnosis was seperate it was a factor in causing some Aspies to become seperatists/elitists and this became a stereotype. Some said Aspergers was too broad. If Aspergers was too broad how was moving everybody in to three even broader catogories going to help this? For those us who finally finally found a label or explanation the label was quickly officially eliminated without our consent. The stereotype of the elitist "aspie" or HFA elitist as well as the really not autistic wrongly diagnosed person are even bigger now.

In the future I would like to see many more subcatogories of autism based on dominient symptoms/traits. This is done with most other conditions.

On a personal note what really angers me all these years later is this. When the recommendations came out most of Aspergers community rallied against it. An exception was the Aspie Supremicist and Aspergers is the next step in Human evolution people because they felt that with bieng freed from the manual labeling disorders they could redefine Aspergers as they saw fit. You might have noticed that the terms Aspergers and Aspie are still around. As collequal terms these have morphed into meaning pretty much a highly intellegent person or a Sheldon type person. This does not include the person diagnosed with Aspergers with an IQ of 90 or a person like me who was diagnosed with moderate severe aspergers. The small minority of Aspie Supremicists got what they wanted.

What I find ironic about the Asperger's removal from the DSM, for years I had seen high functioning ones say how it shouldn't be a disability, it's a next step in evolution. Well, they got what they wanted. They can keep the label and celebrate it while the rest can have autism spectrum disorder.

I see we were having the same thoughts at the same time. Different reaction, as you know from the Autism Social Justice Warrior thread a minority of elitistis getting what the want makes me anything but happy. There are some valid arguments against Aspergers as a label. Not this one, never this one.

Very interesting, there is an exclusive country club mentality with some people. You must have the right level of impairment and the proper diagnostic pedigree to be allowed into the club.

I like to think in analogies, this is to that as that is to this, sort of stuff.

Some of us are on the outside looking in and others are on the inside looking out.

Executive function impairment is not an evolutionary advantage. I understand why people want to feel special. Especially after enduring a lifetime to discrimination. Acceptance is a good thing, entitlement is not.

Sorry, the humor and irony are dwarfed by the reality of issue, threads can take on a life of their own.

2016 Update

Like the the loch ness monster numerous sightings of Aspergers are still bieng reported. This has been blamed on Autistic traits such as difficulty with change and repetitive behaviors. Worse yet there is no evidence Autism diagnosis are going down and even worse yet the idea that autism is not a horrific epidemic continues to have adherents. This Neurodiversity as it has been called has been blamed on elitist "Aspies" and people who think they are autistic but are not. A solution gaining populaity is based on the notion that the mercy killing of Aspergers mollycoddled the spoiled rude brats, that a public execution in Yankee Stadium of Neurodiversity by Jonathan Mitchell will put the dissenters in thier place which is a place that can not be seen nor heard and that people with autism will be universally feared and pitied once again.

So....

You're saying that aspergers is like Elvis?

The media reported that he died back in the Seventies, but his fans still report sightings of him?

Well... that just gets me all shook up!

[quote="B19"]https://jholverstott.wordpress.com/2012/01/30/an-obit-aspergers-disorder-1994-2013/

This amused me, though I surmise that some of the funny and creative minds here could write more entertaining obituaries. So tongue-in-cheek, here is mine:

Name: Asperger's Syndrome
Cause of death: euthanasia
Death certified by: DSM 5 committee
Location of burial: mass grave located within the autism spectrum
Next of Kin and Extended Family: Classic Autism, Other Autistic Disorder, BAP, PDD-NOS et al
Reason for approving euthanasia: political expedience
Age at Death: approximately 60 years old
Service: It was thought best that two separate services had to be held, one for the celebrants, one for the mourners, as they don't speak the same language.

Assurances were given that the patient was humanely and painlessly despatched. These assurances were, as they must be, taken at face value. It was not thought necessary to seek consent from the patient on the grounds that such a person was incapable of making any meaningful input concerning the decision, not being an qualified expert on the value, meaning and experience of her own life. A service of celebration is yet to be organised and Autism Speaks volunteered to cover all funeral expenses, on the condition that the headstone be inscribed with "All autism is an evil disease, autism is an epidemic and so autism must be eradicated from humanity". This generous offer was instantly accepted. The headstone was quickly vandalised by obviously disordered persons unknown and now the body lies in an unmarked grave where Autism Speaks plans to erect a public convenience...[/qoute]

I hate that organization and its dehumanization scheme designed to portray us as people to be cure may She rest in peace :(
