Probably closer to 10 or so, as the crow flies. I'd have to pay a toll, though. If I go toll-free, it's closer to 15-20 miles.

I've lived in Washington my whole life between two cities. I love this state and all the rivers and natural scenery. The winters are a bit cold for me but that's my only big complaint.

Overall, I don't see Eastsound or Orcas Island in the poll (not that I live there, but a friend does).

that's why I included "other unlisted WA city" in the choices. :) with only 20 choices permissible I didn't have the luxury to include lotsa cities/places.

Ezra, you may be thinking of Mount St. Helens which prior to blowing it's stack was a perfectly conical volcano similar to Mt. Fuji.

St Helens blew its stack long before I ever set eyes on it. I don't from mental image really know exactly what Fugi looks like. Just that it's a huge white lone mountain that looks like it's floating, the same as Rainier. Have visited both Rainier and St Hellens before. Very awesome. I like going to the Cascade mountains too. Like around Index is only an hour away. And Mt. Si in Snoqualmie is cool. We finally went to Snoqualmie and North Bend a month or so ago, and it was packed because the Twin Peaks festival was that weekend  I want to go back in October.

being that you said "warshington" that is close enough to an inland empire accent for you to be an honorary eastern warshintonan :star:

The title of the thread is "Washington State".

Not "Washington D.C.".

A mite touchy, aren't we? You didn't notice the smiley after the comment?

And I thought I had no sense of humor...

the specificity regarding rules seems to be a common thing around here.

...BTW , AB , I never before this post heard of inland WA being known as the " Inland Empire " ! 8O I picked it up first in the old FLIPSIDE :) fanzine .
I had only heard it in relation to CA , and Souther Cal-I-Forn-I-Ay , I believe , too !
Just as I never heard of SoCal as " The Southland " - I thought of the one which Lynrrd Skinhead sang 'bout :P ! !! !! !! !! !! !! !! !! !! !! !! !! !! !! !!
I recall a Mama's Family episode referring to wherever the characters were as " The tri-state area " - Coming from the NYC metroples I of course thought of Greater Fun City as that :P ! !! !! !! !! !! !! !! !! !! !!
Yes , yes , yes , duh ~ " names get reused " .

As you probably know, I live in Yakima. But I used to live on the westside most of my life. Kenmore, Bothell, Bellevue, Monroe and Marysville in that order, Bothell being the longest (lived there from before preschool to the end of 7th grade). As for what I DO miss about the westside:
The plump Himalayan blackberries during the late summer. Delicious, when you wash them to get rid of the gunk, and worms.
The Puget Sound beaches. Gorgeous during the summer.
Much more professional TV personalities than the Yakima/Tri-Cities market. Steve Pool just celebrated 40 years at KOMO-4. He's been the chief meteorologist there for decades. Mary Nam is still there as is Molly Shen and Eric Johnson. Here in Yakima, we get third-rate anchors (many who are very young) and reporters who just came out of college. Incredible turnover of staff.

I don't miss a few things about Seattle either:
Some of the worst traffic in the country. I refuse to travel 405 or I-5 during the workday, unless we have to. Awful!
The pouring down rain. We get the sunshine (and more snow than Seattle). :D
Urbanization. All I see in the suburbs now are new housing developments, and less forest. Places like Duvall, Sultan, Carnation and Enumclaw are probably at risk in the next several years by urbanization.

Yakima may be much warmer than Seattle, and look "brown" to any outsider, but there are nice parts of Yakima. Places like Terrace Heights, West Valley and Cowiche are great areas to live.
