The only celebrity death that really affected me was the death of Pete Quaife of The Kinks. Other than that, I don't give a damn.

Another thing is when some of them lived to be such a ripe old age. Like "I can't believe so-in-so is gone" and I think, well they were 92 after all.

I don't really care about or pay much attention to celebs. I don't really feel bad even if it's someone I liked; I mostly feel bad that there won't be anymore stuff with them. There's only one celeb I really care about thou 7 i would feel horrible if she dies cuz I had/have a mega huge crush obsession with her & fell in love with her.

About the only famous person whose death in my lifetime affected me quite a bit was Jim Henson. Too unexpected, too soon, and a person whose characters were beloved to me. His death happened during a time in my life when I had high anxiety and all kinds of problems, so it didn't help. :(

I either didn't even know most of these recent people or they weren't a big deal to me. Like I said before other people die all the time and no one cares. In fact, if a friend or relative you were really close to dies people can be really nasty and insensitive. They act as if it's not normal for you to grieve (it is), that you shouldn't be "bumming everyone else out or whatever they call it", and you should just get over it. But Princess Diana dies and the entire world thinks it should come to a screeching halt to mourn her loss.

Maybe it's because most people live longer now, at least in developed countries, but I think they're just jerks. And of course Americans are and maybe Europeans are obsessed with "celebrities" to the point where it's just repulsive, and that's supposed to be "normal" for NTs.

With celebrity deaths I feel like some people are hamming it up. There's the tendency to jump on the bandwagon, like what happened with Michael Jackson and that Bowie dude.

I feel bad when it's from suicide, overdose, or murder... To realize that someone who gave so much to the world was hurting so badly, or targeted and killed because of their gift, is tragic.

If it's from natural causes, it's not so tragic, but just seems the decent thing to do, to take a moment to remember them and be grateful for the unique gift they shared with the world.

But I suppose I only feel this way with celebrities whose work inspired me personally. If it's someone I wasn't terribly familiar with, then no, I don't feel anything at all.

I know what you mean. If their work meant something to me I might take a moment to think, "Oh, that's sad," especially if they were young, but I don't understand the mass outpouring of grief. Lostonearth35 mentioned a perfect example of this, Princess Diana. I was mildly sad because she was still so young, and I felt for her sons, but I watched the worldwide grieving with incomprehension. Carrie Fisher's death was the most unsettling to me because I love Star Wars and her death at a relatively young age was so unexpected. In the end, though, I didn't know her, so the feeling only lasted a short time.

Then again, I never idolised celebrities when I was a teenager, so maybe I don't react too strongly because I don't feel the illusion of being close to any of them.

I'm dreading the death of Mick Avory from the same band off and on. I know it will be a sad day for me when he does go. I'll just share the news on my Facebook wall when it happens, if Facebook is still around.

If you never got any enjoyment, knowledge or emotion from whatever talent they are renowned for, why should it concern you more than the person around the corner who died last week, on a human scale it is unfortunate and sad they passed on but there's no reason you should feel strong emotion if they didn't touch your life. You can respect what they had success in if you want, I try to, not if it's something I find offensive that the world could do without but not at the expense of them dying or suffering pain.

I feel the world is diminished by the passing of anybody "great" - e.g. we used to have a world with Peter Ustinov in it. It gave me a bit of optimism. My reaction to the death of any of these gems is that we can't afford the loss, given how many Evils we're stuck with. I feel a brief personal sadness and then a sense that we've all been robbed.

I feel terrible for anyone who loses family members, and though I have difficulty connecting with the emotions in a logical way (I still feel them pretty badly) I often get muddled and confused for a while.

i can agree with this. it's hard to sympathize with a drug overdose or something similar.

the deaths of 2016 did not affect me because i was not very interested in the work of those people, and i can live with the fact that their oeuvre will not expand. the one death that got to me the most was the one of king rama IX of thailand in october, not because he affected me, but because of the symbolism. he was one of the few things holding thailand together during the recent coups and unrest.

who knows what will happen under vajiralongkorn?

(that, and i'm interested in modern monarchies in general).

Generally speaking I agree but like anything else in life there are exceptions. In a way it also depends on who it is and what they are famous for. As someone who likes the Fast and Furious movies (no I'm not ashamed to admit that!), I was saddened by Paul Walker's death for example, as I really like his work, and ditto for a few others.

I think it can also depend on the way someone went; so many die by their own hand (substance abuse, etc) which makes it harder to feel sad for them.

Most people only feel extreme empathy for friends and family. Lacking that for celebrities you never knew is normal.

You're completely normal. A lot of people feel sad about celebrity deaths but move on quickly. You don't know them personally, so why would you feel sad? If everyone grieved every celebrity death, we'd all be a mess, especially after 2016. Some people go through a grieving process because they grew up with a celebrity's music or movies and they associate this celebrity with their childhood, so it's like a part of their childhood is gone.
