Yes. I usually do withdraw to my own thoughts in those circumstances.

Yeah me as well. I wonder if that's common in AS?

I know some aspies have adapted well to handle those kinds of stimuli. If it has to be done to pursue a special interest, mountains may get moved.

I can handle busy bars/clubs with loud music but wonder if that's because the stimuli is somehow different and actually bars/clubs are not actually that social.

Fire alarms are piercing, definitely unpleasant. Tornado sirens fill me with dread every time - I've been frightened of severe weather for as long as I remember. I think the sirens are the most haunting sound in the world.

Almost worse though, for every September 11th anniversary my college decided to blast the screeching bagpipe version of 'Amazing Graze' over the PA. Thought my ears were going to start bleeding.

I get very confused and frustrated in loud restaurants, bars, and especially clubs. If more than one person is talking at the same time I have a lot of trouble following conversation even without music and lights, so I usually just end up sitting quietly.

I used to like it at school as it would get us all out of lessons. I remember a period where it went off pretty much every day. Good times :)

Where I worked pre-retirement, they had to test the alarm/sprinkler system by holding a lighter under each sprinkler head until the whole thing activated. So every 5 or 10 minutes the alarm was going off with this blaring obnoxious sound. Each time it lasted til the tester could get off his ladder and go turn it off, just enough make me a nervous wreck. They did this at least once or twice a year. Those days I was SO glad my job took me on the road to work on computers is other peoples' offices; I couldn't hit the road fast enough!
