Have you lost your "special interests"?
No, not really, though my interests has evolved as I learnt more. I've also picked up some new interests along the way and some has been replaced with similar interests. Like as a young boy I always liked to build stuff with lego and invent things, create worlds etc. Now instead of building with Lego I build with more advanced tools and equipment, computers, Minecraft, Virtual Reality, and I'm planning to learn 3D printing. I just need to get my hands on one.
Another special interest I have acquired along the way is everything related to space travel and colonization of space. As young it did not occur to me this was something that existed.
Other interests of mine is science fiction. As a young I read a lot of sci-fi comics. I still do but now I probably read more books because I've gotten much better at understanding english and I can grasp more advanced ideas and concepts. Today I prefer hard science fiction as they are often more realistic and I get to learn real life stuff as those books are often written by people knowledgeable in hard sciences. But I do also enjoy more light sci-fi stuff like action movies and stuff. But I'm more of a Trekkie than a Star Wars fan
I also enjoy reading and writing on forums about my interests and talking to people about my favorite topics. But also on everything related to my life in some way. I guess I like to learn stuff about people and the world to better understand myself and why I struggle so much with people and certain things in life and then how I can solve those issues.
There are of course some things that I'm just not interested in like sports and animals and certain other things.
I never get bored, that would be impossible with all the interesting things going on in the world and all topics I'm interested in. There's always something new to learn. And it's fascinating to communicate with other people about my interests. And as I got diagnosed many years ago and learned about autism and the autism community things has gotten better and I've been able to get many friends that are like me and like the same things as me. Before I new anything about autism I did not have any friends and life was difficult and sad. Things are still difficult of course but now I'm able to work out solutions because I know my limits better.
