I didn't hear this as an Aspie story, but there was a guy in the Yukon who went down a trail to see what had sprouted one spring, and kept finding his favourite places just as they turned green. It was really nice weather, so he just made a lean-to and caught a supper, using his knife and other pocket gear. The next day, he continued his impromptu vacation, heading over to another lake to camp. Then, the third day, he noticed an airplane flying a search pattern, and got worried, wondering what kid had wandered off. Then, he went "Oh Oh!" and hurried home. "I just got caught up in the green!" he explained.
When I do get lost, the map in my head does not match the map on the ground, and so everything I think I'm learning gets scrambled. That makes it very hard to get re-oriented when I do "get found" and even harder to navigate that area the next time.
