I stick to McDonald's for 'eating out', and the only dishes I ever order are Sweet Chilli Chicken wraps and Barbecue Chicken wraps. Keeping it simple.
I love McDonald's. I always order fries & a burger at restaurants when that's on the menu & I'll also order onion-rings or variations(onion mum, onion blossom, cactus blossom ect) when they're available.

Yeah, it's distracting especially when multiple people are talking. Eating at home is much more relaxing.
Fortunately a lot of restaurants have their menus online so you can decide before entering the chaos. 8)

I usually stick with patronizing a few favorite eateries (environments that are familiar are almost never challenging to navigate); as many places in my region have good to very-good food, often at reasonable prices.

When I'm told of a new place, I would read the reviews on Yelp.com (my standards are above average - that is a Yelp review of at least four stars out of five is viewed is a favorable place to try).

It can be helpful to view an eatery's menu online. I have a chance to walk-by eateries whose menus (and prices) are displayed on menus outside entrances (here in my region, it's not just the pricey places that display their menus outside). This also presents opportunities to scope-out the overall environment, and (along with Yelp reviews - which are generally reliable) shape decisions on whether or not to try these places; and possibly add new favorites to a list eateries.

If you have a hard time ordering, I would suggest only going to restaurants that have menus online. The prices can be different but usually the menus are the same. Also going to restaurants where most of the food is something you would enjoy.

I generally have a much easier time ordering at a restaurant than I do trying to decide what to cook. I usually eat something I didn't cook maybe once or twice a week, at most. I've gone weeks without going to a restaurant at all.

It took me about half an hour to decide what to fix for supper tonight. I was going to fix a package of some kind of chicken, but couldn't find it in the freezer. After considering a hamburger (I keep frozen hamburger patties in the freezer), a ham sandwich (I usually have some ham in the refrigerator), spaghetti, a salad, lentils and rice, and various frozen vegetables from the freezer, I finally settled on some fried rice using some of the ham, some rice (I often have cooked rice in the refrigerator), an egg, and some soy sauce. As usual, the fried rice was pretty good.
