Some guys are pretty good at it, some guys are only doing it because nobody else will. I've seen some guys who do such a crap job, I am always super tempted to sneak over to the board after the guy walks away for a beer...
I think it depends on the band, though. If it's a punk show, I kind of like having muffled vocals, I don't know why. Probably because most of the lyrics don't really matter anyway =)
Unfortunately, when it's my band playing, I just have to hope for the best...unless I want to get a wireless guitar system so I can walk into the audience to see how everything sounds =|
I have also learned, if the sound guy asks me if I need a mic, I should always say yes, and make sure I'm loud enough in the monitors.

im gonna sound boring but i dont think i can tolerate rock/ punk / metal / house/ music that is beat driven. even with good sound engineers. obvs there are exceptions.
not all live is bad. i saw Ryöksopp and Tycho at a festival [same night too!!] and thought they were phenomenal. the balance and attention to details was spot on. maybe i'm just a snob xD

I've gone to five shows in the last six years and glad I went. I saw bands from Japan - LITE, Shonen Knife twice and The Let's Go's. Also went to All the Pretty Horses. I went alone to four and met people I knew at two. It's hit or miss, I've definitely been miserable at shows. It kind of depends on how much you 
the bands and your state of mind going in. I sometimes go to shows to see the bands in person although I prefer listening to music at home.

well, that's exactly where my snobbery originates i think.
i have always been in choirs since aged 6 so my ears are trained to getting all the different layers in the harmonies. i like to do that with any genre but yesterday was really overwhelming, like a hammer hitting my brain.
