This reminds me of a quote from The Golden Girls

Rose: "Dorothy you aren't being very open minded."

Dorothy: "I am too now shut up!"

I can certainly say that autistic people tend to show a certain rigidity of opinion, as well as typically black-and-white thinking. So this means that they may be closed-minded, at least on certain things. But I think everyone's closed-minded, on certain things. Maybe the "closed-minded" trait is not very valid as a sign of autism.

Maybe I should have used a better word... What would have been a better and less offensive word to use to describe that kind of behavior?

I've seen quite a few NTs who are closed-minded. It sucks that my mum has to be one of them. Perhaps, having her in my life has taught me that NTs are closed-minded.

First, I didn't call it offensive. As to a "better" word to use - I'm trying to say that while rigidity of opinion and black-and-white thinking seem to be validated both scientifically and anecdotally as autistic traits, I don't think the concept of closed-mindedness is very specific to autistic people, so maybe it doesn't add much to the discussion.

I never said you called it offensive. I am the one who realized that the term I used is offensive.

I certainly was before I took psychedelics, I was then questioning everything I thought I knew. I've become more closed minded again since, but that probably occurs naturally with age, you become set in your ways.

I have seen some people who are so open-minded their brains have fallen out. They follow the crowd, even when it does the wrong thing, which is detrimental on many levels. Some people have no opinions about anything or any passions. This is sad.

LOL the fact that Trump was voted President means that the close-mindedness is much more widespread than a trait amongst us. That being said, the reason I be closed-minded is that, simply, I know more about the subject and how it affects me than any other person. So, while I can have a factual debate, I hate arguing opinions.

Sometimes that's actually closed-minded. I get what you mean though.

I criticize myself for a lot of things but one thing I do know I am is open-minded whereas many NTs aren't. A lot of NTs believe in what they are told esp when it comes to mass media. If you dare to challenge them about it they don't even want to hear it. One good example is allopathic medicine. I was told by one person that my symptoms after using a medication has nothing to do with the medication. So many people believe in the power of allopathy and yet they don't realize how dangerous it can be..the worst offender is pills for mood. People discredit me about a lot of things I experience because they're too closed-minded so this is nothing new.
I am a picky eater but that isn't the same as being closed-minded. If we define closed-minded as highly opinionated then yes but this really only comes out when I have real experience or insight so I actually do know more than the person with the opposite POV and the reason I say I'm open minded about it is I often understand why they have that POV and I do recognize that nothing is absolute except for taxes and..well you know the d word but I'm confident enough that the likelihood is I'm right. In some cases I wish I was actually wrong about things so I do at least try to open my mind there. You're opening your mind to the possibilities of something great but you're realistic enough to know the likelihood.
I'm definitely skeptical/cynical but that's not the same thing as being closed-minded. It's just a way of protecting yourself.

Maybe I'm not an Aspie either but I do know my brain is wired differently than the average person so I'm certainly not NT. Is there something other than NT or Aspie?

It's probly because it's kinda hard to be closed-minded when your experiences can require an open-mind to understand and mine do sometimes.

I don't know enough others to say whether or not we're close minded. I'd like to think of myself as being fairly open minded

I think I'm very open minded and mostly rather to nice. At least as long as nobody dares to mess around with me.

Neurodiverse.

There is such a thing as being allistic but not neurotypical.

it seems like a lot of aspies like to think they're better than other people.

When I read this, I thought deeply onto my arguments and problems with others. My Mom has a hard time convincing me that I know how to drive but in my head I don't. I don't know if that means i'm close-minded or not though. Your Opinion? :)
