Come to think of it, if you were tight for cash (had no money)
you could simply buy a pair of decent dumb ear defenders, a pair of cheap stereo ear buds compatible with your phone.
And simply put the ear bud headphones on before putting the ear defenders on.

As the tiny wires for the stereo headphones shouldn't let too much if any sound in when the ear defenders are placed over the top.

Then plug the stereo headphones into your phone and install a simple microphone app on the smart phone.
this will likely cost you $20 for a decent pair of cheap ear defenders, perhaps $10 for a cheap pair of stereo ear bud headphones. and perhaps a dollar or two for a microphone app for a smartphone.

So for $35 you should be up and running. and if you want to improve on this then when you have
the money, buy a compatible mic, and buy a decent pair of isolation headphones.

Why does everyone assume I have a portable telephone? One reason I'm asking about the acoustic end of a shotgun mic is because I can't get my Magic Jack phone to work at all, and the last three MP3 players I bought were defective.

I suggested you adapt a directional microphone for a portable telephone because it seemed to be the most cost effective way to go. The interface is pretty simple, an inline jack connected to some basic electronic circuitry.

A professional shotgun mic costs several times as much. You could buy a USB computer mic for half the cost, but a lot of smart people have resisted jumping on the USB bandwagon despite its obvious advantages. For one, you can plug a bunch of devices into a USB hub and let your software figure out how to get the audio from one device to another.

I have no idea whether it is practical to convert a USB mic into one with an inline jack interface.

I think you are right. with how cheap and easily available smartphones are, it would be perhaps a bit silly not to use one.

As for converting USB mic's to Mini Jack Mic's, not a great idea. I think it would be more trouble than its worth to be honest. especially if you were to see how cheap some of the mic's are that are compatible with smart phones.

To be honest, for the money involved. I think that we have perhaps given you the most cost effective solutions on the market. Also perhaps the most socially acceptable.

the end result will unlikely be as good, and may cause you to bring attention to yourself in the kind of "tin foil hat , speaking to aliens telepathically" kind of way, which unless you are trying to get in with aliens to speak with them telepathically, isn't likely a good image enhancement and probably not what you are looking for in terms of solution (no offence, don't mean to be mean, my humour can be a bit of an acquired taste so to speak).

To be honest, a decent quality solution will cost you a few dollars. Sadly not everything can be synthesized on a star trek duplicator. well at least not yet. perhaps in a few years time... especially if i keep talking to the aliens with my tin foil hat on...

How does one get started with cellular telephony? I went shopping for a used transceiver and the clerk couldn't define his terms. The only person I know who uses one regularly is not computer literate. Is there any crossover? How do you limit your exposure to non-ionizing radiation? How many hours a week do you devote to avoiding invasions of privacy, and with what success? How do you avoid exorbitant monthly bills? How do you put up with those tiny screens? Is there a good benevolent association for the miners and builders of touch screens, and what is an appropriate donation?

If you put together a professional quality rig perhaps you could make recordings that could be uploaded to YouTube.

It seems as if people who use cell phones don't remember how they learned to use them, and can no longer communicate with others who have not. It reminds me of Facebookland, which ate many friends.
