Abbreviations
Just a little backdrop to this thread.
First off, I really hate when abbreviations and acronyms are used without first identifying their specific meaning.
Second, I really, really hate abbreviations and acronyms. They create an insider's club and only those who readily understand the abbreviation or acronyms (the insiders) can have a seat at the table.
You might say this is my pet peeve.
My response or you might say my revenge is to periodically publish a list of abbreviations that are commonly used. It sits as a small file on my computer and periodically I add one or two acronyms to the list. My criteria for adding new abbreviations is that it must be found in the wild and must have relevance to Wrong Planet. Billions of abbreviations exists in the wide world, they are the scourge of humanity, and publishing a full list of them would only promote confusion.
I have tried to make this file a sticky but have been unsuccessful. Apparently the ability to make a thread a sticky lies above the Moderator level, maybe just Alex himself. Till then expect to see this thread pop up periodically.

Abbreviations (acronyms) are also used in combinations. For example, I've applied NT/HFA here on WP lately; that is NT/HFA experiences, friendships, etc, etc. - AS/NT also applies. Specific resources concerned with AS, and HFA are noted as abbreviations. Here on WP, I've mentioned AANE - Autism Aspergers NEtwork.
AANE is ahead of the curve on AS and HFA awareness; that is AANE grasps what can make NT/HFA friendships ..........successful! Let's reassess AANE's experiences to focus on just what makes NT/HFA (or AS/NT) friendships successful, and post experiences here on WP...........ASAP!

The point exactly!
The Louis Jordan WWII video clip put abbreviations to song - brilliant!
Thank-you for starting a discussion thread focusing on abbreviations commonly used here on WP.
The first mentions of abbreviations (acronyms) in the first paragraph of a given typed work must spell-out what an abbreviation mean in 'CAPS' in first letters of words. Hence, abbreviations can then function like an understandable code.
Abbreviations reduce wordiness in typing, and hence speed the writer's/typist's expressions of thoughts perspectives, etc. - as well as better convey understanding to readers.
A couple of abbreviations I apply here on WP are:
* i.e., means 'id est' - Latin for 'in other words.'
* e.g., means 'exempli gratia' - Latin for 'for example.'
After reading this discussion thread on abbreviations, I further sense that discussing abbreviations might just be one of many ways to "break the ice" so to speak on those difficult issues here on WP!
