This is my issue.

It's why I struggle when people are unkind, I automatically internalise and lack the boundary.

Then I build the boundary. And because it's after the fact it looks like a grudge and I look bitter and I take longer than most people to forget about it.

I think most people have a thing where they can choose whose words to take seriously or not?

Yes exactly! For me I would also think about it throughout the rest of the interaction -- and oftentimes even after the interaction is over.
