Did you understand the concept of grades as a child?

Then there was that one time in grade school that the school used a REALLY strange grading system. They used letters to stand for adjective words, rather than letters in sequence in the alphabet. Like "O" for outstanding, and "I" improving, and "A" for average. Both my parents AND I were thoroughly confused by THAT report card!
Reminds me of a slightly amusing story. Most of my grades were on an A-F scale (jumping to U for ungradable). However, a few of the subjects were marked on a Fail/Pass/Merit/Distinction basis. I got my report card back, and it said I got a D for Business Studies. Naturally, since it was displayed next to the other grades and there was no clear distinction, I thought that I'd gotten a D grade on the A-F scale (absentmindedly forgetting that my Business Studies had been a BTEC course, which are almost if not always Pass/Fail). However, I was pleasantly surprised when I got my certificates and found out that D stood for distinction in that particular case.
