You have reminded me that I know people with profound autism and they show no symptoms of pain or illness and the caregiver must be vigilant in order to keep them safe and get treatment when necessary.

blazingstar ... it’s truly and an eye opening area, and one that those who have worked in the field, see quite a bit of. Absolutely, vigilance is key.

This isn't restricted to autism. There are some medical conditions, genetic in nature, that cause impaired perception of pain.

Yeah I find it really interesting (I'm hypermobile as well) and it started when I began to do mindfulness because while doing the body scan I realised that I was actually in a lot of pain but until I had that focus I didn't notice it and when I stopped it was like it went away. It's like my brain decides to ignore it in some cases?? So I'll be sick and not notice it until it gets really bad but when something clicks out of place suddenly (often my knees and shoulders atm) I REALLY feel it.

I think the expectation of pain makes it feel worse sometimes. This is what I'm getting from reading this thread.
