Redefining the phrase "be yourself"
I very rarely bring up these topics unsolicited. Usually someone asks me what I think of this or that. Then when I answer honestly, they start telling me how they dislike my opinions or that I am like this or that. I have a feeling that they are goading me, just asking me to get a response and then verbally attack me. I have problems reading people, so I cannot tell for sure what their motives are.
In any case, my opinions are vastly different than the majority of the people here. It is hard to get along when I try to "be myself".

It is not unusual to meet people who will be hostile to you for only two reasons. 1: It looks safe.
2: You remind them of someone they don't like.
Dislike is often aroused by anything that reminds people of their failures and confusion in school. Politicians have gotten whole-room cheers for proposing to end public schools. Many people have Dunning-Kruger syndrome, and learn misplace their trust. The more aware folk know that they are only smart enough to cheat in school and fake it in their jobs. Attacking you is one way to feel safer in their illusions. Maybe 10% are actually competent, so they are easily banished, unless they are both needed, and polite about having to work around various foolishness.
Whether your opinions are based on superior reasoning or madness, they look about the same to most people. History is full of advanced thinking that was resisted for a generation or more. When I was in school, there were still university courses about "land bridges" because the pre-continental drift professors still had tenure, but no flexibility. Don't be surprised if you are hoeing a lonely row. At least you avoid the endless distractions of the jungle.
