Question
I was always very big into movies since I was a child. I'm always quoting them, talking to friends about them, and enjoy knowing what actor is from what other movies. I watch a lot of them because it's like adding them to a watched collection in my head. I also strongly believe that watching so much really helped me with communicating and social situations because I tend to mimic characters I see (probably not a good thing because it took me so long to figure out I have AS). As for being able to follow them, I can never really tell who's good or bad unless it's obvious from their clothing or look or if they've played a villain in other movies. I also have a hard time figuring out if a movie is good or bad. I know if I liked it or not, but I'll have to read reviews and compare their thoughts with my own so determine if it's bad, e.g., Super Mario Brothers, Dragon Ball Evolution, etc.
I don't like watching long movies. If it's over two hours I get bored easily, and modern filmmaking can be a little distracting.
What I like is silent film. There was a raw amateurishness even in the most professional productions back then and it shows. Each scene in the better movies was almost like a game of "I Spy" where you as the viewer get to pick out the details--what gets used in this scene? Nothing's wasted.
Also, it's a form of stage acting. Facial expressions are emphasized, body language is easier to interpret--and usually there is an amazing orchestra score featuring bits and pieces of famous music, quoting songs referenced in the movie, new improvisations--and I'm trying to pick all this out and enjoy it.
And it all takes place in a high-contrast black and white world--unless they tint the stock for colors in an action scene which is cool. Blue means nighttime. Peach means indoor (lamplight) and Red means fire or battles. Green means a forest. It's kind of neat...the kabuki theatre of the Western world.
If they would start filming them again I would love it.

I am wondering if silent movies can be made again. The very first version of The Railway Children was a silent movie.
But even ordinary black and white movies are easier to watch somehow. I find one of the issues with modern movies is that they keep changing scenes too quickly and everything is too fast paced. Modern adverts are like that where the scenes come up one after the next at a pace that is too fast to keep up with. It is why many modern adverts I have to turn away and not watch them, especially ones which flash words on the screen, as ones eyes are drawn to the words and before one can read them, they change. All these flashing images are hard to watch.
Computer games can be the same. Not all, but some are.
Acting... Uhmmm. The standards became very high, but somehow it is harder for actors to connect with their audiences like it used to be.
The types of films I really enjoy have space. Napolian Dynamite is one. Homecoming is another. The second version of The Railway Children filmed in the 1970's (Not the third version filmed in the 1990's) also had space. Space is a sort of timeless appeal. The gaps where nothing takes place... Like waiting for trains... It is this that some directors have really grasped but many have not.
Space is important. Space is amazing!

That's very true about old silent films!! I've seen loads and prefer them miles above the voice type. Clara Bow is my favourite.
