That's odd. There are nice people who do bad things. Then again, she might actually have a problem. She could be a kleptomaniac. Kleptomaniacs are addicted to stealing whether or not they have a need to. They do it because stealing gives them an adrenaline rush. What she did was wrong, but it's her business so I would stay out of it.

Thanks for your opinions. It's helped me to work out what I think.

She may have intended to pay for the item, but forgot. But I do not believe this is the case.

I don't think she is a bad person, and I hope we can still be friendly. I would have difficulty trusting her, but as someone to chat to when I'm in the garden, that's probably not an issue anyway.

They usually spend a lot of time in the garden, playing with the children, but since this happened, I have not seen them in the garden at all. I hope she is not too ashamed to speak to me.

Tally,

I hope not too.

Does your garden have some produce that her's does not? Perhaps you could collect a bit of it and deliver it their door. Not making a big thing out of it just a nice neighborly gesture? Once she sees you aren't judging her harsely, it might be easier to face you again (assuming thats what is going on).

Here everybody keeps to themselves, so what would be viewed as a neighbourly gesture in some places would be viewed as just plain strange here. I think the neighbors here would be pretty surprised if they suddenly got a basket of herbs from my garden.

Good point!

I just got a bag of ruburb from my neighbor so that was the first thing that came to mind.

If her problem is truly drinking, then unless you have some alcohol lying around that you don't want her to steal, I wouldn't worry about not trusting her. People are too complicated to be summed up with one act. If she had stolen something else other than Vodka, you might have reason to keep an eye out for your stuff. But the alcohol seems to be the key.
