I think that I would rather talk about trains than engage in the usual small talk :)

If you get me started on trains, you'll get a large earful of how obsolete they are, and how light rail should be integrated with road vehicles.

I am fine. It is more about my humourous observations in life. While there are occasions where difficulties arize... I just steer conversations towards trains or something I like. Oh.. Yes. I do get some occasiona where others puzzle. I can start going into depth and the whole conversation has changed subject a couple of times and I am still answering assuming we are on the origional subject, and they are like "Catch up. We are not talking about trains now". Haha.

People like to talk the subjects of their interest. But that's anything else but trains usually. You may care about trains once you are on your own again. But try to care their interests and their questions more and try to talk about the interests of the others a bit more once you are with others. You'll realize their point of view better then and often you'll learn interesting new things that you don't yet know or don't ever were aware of. Beside of anything else it causes them to accept you more and even to accept your interest in trains a lot more.

Doubt that:

How you'll integrate this in road vehicles?

^^ That train, of course, is CGI. It is interesting, though, that the illustrations of steam engines in nursery school books are often better at the proportions of boiler to cylinder than many modern proposed steam revivals.

"What were the last words of Charles Lucas?"
"Never drive at night."

Remember that typically NTs don't even have "special interests" in the autistic se"nse... but do engage in small talk.

One technique when caught in a small talk situation is to say nothing at all, but rather, smile and nod. There can also be some verbal responses that mean nothing, but go over okay:

"I know what you mean!"
"Uh-huh."
"Good to know!"
"Oh, jeez!"
"Sometimes you can't win for losing."
"Wow!"
"You don't say!"
"I know, I know..."

None of these is meant to be taken literally. They're just small talk filler material. You might memorize a few and pull them out of your tool bag when needed.

(dark humor)
"So, how do you like that weather, ey?"
Response: "Oh jeez."
"Well, hey, did you hear about so and so's grandpa?"
Response: "Uh-huh, I know what you mean."
"He just passed away."
Response: "You don't say... Good to know."
Awkward silence
Response: "Sometimes you can't win for losing."
