I asked my sister about the rocking. She says she doesn't do it for hours on end like she used to. Does it regularly now to music, no more than 30 minutes a week though, and on an upholstered chair rather than on her bed. A few minutes here and there, as a sort of meditation so stress doesn't build up like it used to. And the people in her life now are more understanding so that helps too.
She had no solution except to talk to someone, and to slowly reduce the amount of time you spend rocking. Using the chair will help because upholstery is too fat to grip tightly, and you can't get the range of motion. She did say she has bone spurs along her spine but doesn't know if it's caused by rocking or not.
Good luck.

I surprised you didn't say anything about ASD to her. Do you think she wouldn't want to know?

Hi CarlM. Thanks for asking. We texted and I mentioned I thought I had aspergers, used words like different, masking, runs in families. She said I have a niece that rocks hard enough to break chairs. She knows she's different and is open about it and people accept her for it and she accepts herself. "And f**k it all" haha. She had such low self esteem in school but like I said she is very smart when it comes to lit, music, design. She shares the quirkiest house ever with something interesting to be seen in every nook and cranny (but not a hoarder - very interesting, cohesive when you stop to actually look at it). Has always earned less than $10k/year. non-judgemental like me but feels intense pressure the way I do. I'm hoping she'll do some research and bring this up with me.
I just checked her very niche pinterest account - 2,516 followers, 472 active - definitely an eye for design and visual patterning.

I like the weighted blanket, rocking chair, and stretching first ideas.

Would an exercise routine with similar motion help? Something a little different so it’s not hard on your overworked parts? Something like yoga could be done over and over in a pattern and might be soothing.
