I don't consciously memorise anything. It's more like I don't forget the dates when important things happen (e.g., someone's birthday from childhoood), and then that date encodes into colour (blue / blue), and then I can recall the birthday when that same date happens again on the calendar. When it's blue / blue again, I remember some of the blue / blue things from other years.
I think it's more like synaesthesia. There are only 366 days on the calendar and I've lived a lot of years, so I've got most of the dates filed inside the colour rolodex of my memory.
There are lots of dates and lots of events I can't remember, but the ones that are imprinted on me cycle back into memory every time that date repeats.
Examples:
5th of May (blue / blue)
Birthday of RR, a girl in my class when I was 7
Birthday of JR, a boy in my class when I was 13
Sat in back garden listening to Led Zeppelin when I was 14
Birthday of AH, a professor I worked with
Birthday of RA, a colleague
Birthday of SP, my cousin's son's friend in another country
Had surgery in 2010
Friend got a new car in 2011
Broke my foot in 2016
