Is the cause a smaller brain than NT people , or are there are many explanations ?

Ma Nature plays dice with genes so that we will branch out and adapt to more environments. The pot gets stirred so vigorously that even basic sexual attraction gets reversed about 10% of the time, but the grand experiment has found that such people strengthen their families by adding an extra adult to child care, thus still passing on their genes. The genetic lottery produces countless other variations in basic xenophobia, sense of direction, synesthesia, shizophrenia, IQ, EQ, courage, strength, health, fertility, longevity, etc etc etc.
I like to think of genetics as a vast musician's mixing board, with sliders to set hundreds of levels. One group of sliders has strong effects on Autism, and if they are mostly maxed out, you get someone who may have wonderful perceptions, but cannot speak. If only a few of them are far off average, the brain can work around it, but in many different ways, according to which ones are "off."
Free education is mostly about the work-arounds, to produce standard citizens. If you want to be part of the branching out that AS is so good at, you have to be self-taught in your specialty on the way to pushing it farther.

Researchers may have at last found a genetic marker for all or most with asd, published just a few weeks ago.

Just shows autism research is worldwide proud that Hispanic countries are playing a major part:

I believe it is lots of genes and if a person has a certain constellation of genes they are autistic. Lots of current research supporting this too.
