The great Hockey star, Wayne Gretsky, said "I don't skate to where the puck is, I skate to where it is going." When I was choosing a career, I tried something old-fashioned and comfortable, but the business was dying. Then I decided to build for the future. It didn't turn out as I had expected, but I'm very glad I worked to improve it, not just take the easy money.
I had a friend who translated some brochures into French. She got paid, but her work was not used because it sounded a bit too formal. There are a lot of nuances. There is probably a niche opening up for helping renewable energy equipment manufacturers communicate technical details to worldwide customers.

I've been thinking for a long time about traveling to teach English abroad.

I've thought about going back to Libya where my family is. But Libya is a Muslim dominant society and my family is all Muslim, while I'm an atheist. So I'm not sure I'll be very comfortable there. Plus, Libya is currently politically and economically unstable, and I'm not even sure I could go there.

I thought about going to other countries, but I feel nervous about going somewhere I don't know anybody and don't even speak the language. For instance, I'd love to go to Japan; but I think that could be disastrous for an Aspie given the cultural emphasis on etiquette.

I might have an opportunity to enroll in the English for Heritage Speakers at Georgetown University, which would prepare me for work with the government. But I'm not sure if that's what I really want to do with my life, because I really want to travel and teach English.

I'm almost 40, so I feel like I need to commit to career path and stick with it.

A lot of people get a job first and then look up what country they are going to.
