Getting shot for not being a social butterfly. That seems harsh

If it were me, I’d shoot them for being a social butterfly.

A place of employment is NOT a social club. The only social interaction that should be taking place should be work-related. Any other type of socialization is cause for disciplinary action, up to and including termination.

There's a balance. A certain amount of off-topic conversation can help employees work better with each other and enjoy their job more, with the result that they're more productive than if they were trapped in some Stakhanovite cubicle hell, growing careless and slack from sheer tedium and resentment. Too much, and they're leaning on their tools or having endless coffee breaks instead of actually doing anything. A good manager knows when to let it slide and when to crack the whip. I've had couple who cracked the whip at exactly the wrong time. Came down hard on harmless chatter between people they didn't like, while letting their favourites treat the place like a holiday camp. Result: everyone doing bad work.

I kind of agree with that. I'm against allowing employers to drive their staff flat out. My own bosses were fine with idle banter as long as the work got done, and although I myself preferred to "do my eight and leave at the gate," couldn't understand how some of them found the time to gabble away half the day, and had a lot of trouble focussing when the idle banter around me got too loud and bubbly, I'd prefer that to seeing a workplace turned into a miserable sweatshop. I read one study that figured a lot of the problems in the workplace were down to a common assumption that it's all about an economic transaction when it's a social transaction.
