I made the "correct" deduction with this riddle. But knowing I can't always go on assumptions, I might ask for clarification. "Hey, Sam, you bought that clock for your wall instead of a painting, right?"
Sam, if she's a typical neurotypical, may get hostile and nasty and say "YEAH, ya think? Idiot!"
Of course, even if Sam had bought it for some other reason, she might not divulge that information, requiring the question. In that case, she might reply, "Well, now that you asked, I actually bought this clock as a gift for my parents," as if I (or anyone) was supposed to infer that. Those that don't ask would assume it was for the wall and would be surprised to learn, later on, that it was for some other reason.
