Normal times: I quite like eating out, but I'm a bit specific as to where and when. I stick to a short list of places around town where I know I'm unlikely to get an unpleasant surprise from the food, the prices, the noise, crowds etc. I only meet someone elsewhere if I'm feeling unusually robust and adventurous. That's one reason I hate going on holiday- the only places to eat are unfamiliar restaurants, which can freak me out to the point where dinner is a burger sitting on a wall in the rain.

Plague era- I just don't eat out anymore. Ever. I'm at work all week taking all sorts of precautions against infecting and being infected. It seems utterly insane to then go to a public place and drop all those precautions, for fun.

I hardly eat in fast food restaurants because it really is usually full of chavvy families with noisy kids. That or groups of obnoxious teenagers. So if I do get McDonald's or something I take it away.

It's funny because (rightly or wrongly) I always think of a restaurant as a posh place where they wouldn't tolerate anything disorderly or naff, and grubby joints such as McDonalds as degenerated cafes at best. I say "degenerated" because I've been in a few cafes that I've quite liked. Perhaps "cesspit" would be a better description of McDonalds and other places where they don't keep things nice.

_cora_ Burritos! I agree that tacos are a mess...they seem designed to help you scatter the contents every-which-way without getting your fingers dirty (though your lap might be a mess!). As long as the restaurant doesn't overfill them, though, I find burritos to usually be manageable. :thumright:

Joe90 Thanks for the warning. Now I know not to sit anywhere near you!

_cora_, I stand corrected. Burritos are manageable in some restaurants.

Last night my bride brought a burrito home for me and I hated it. It tasted great but it was huge, unmanageable, and difficult to eat because it was not structurally designed for convenient eating.

If burritos are also messy in a restaurant, investigate options other than tacos (always a mess) and burritos (which are great if they aren't huge).

Good hunting!

i prefer a home cooked meal over a meal at a restaurant. I know what's in my food.
