I would suspect the 40% figure is excessive-----especially within the "autism of today." Which is autism as a "spectrum disorder."

Under the DSM-V, the vast majority of those within "Level One," a smaller majority of those within "Level Two," and the vast majority of those within "Level Three" would probably have "intellectual disability."

I would suspect that 40% of people diagnosed with "autistic disorder" under the DSM-IV would have been 'intellectually-disabled." Very few under "Asperger's Syndrome" would be so classified.

Under the DSM-III criteria, it's quite possible that more than 50% of people so diagnosed were "intellectually-disabled."

i was in special ed for most of my elementary school years. so i am guessing i was one of the "ID."

Not really this was actually discussed a few days ago you have a baseline figure of 30% in childhood that largely stays the same in adulthood then half of the borderline 25% that splits in adulthood between ID and normal IQ.

Of course I meant that Levels One and Two usually doesn’t feature Intellectual Disability.

^^^that is a good point, this is not a life to be living a long one. if the addlements can't be fixed or even ameliorated, let it end before too much suffering takes place.

^^^^ I function comparatively well, but I need small amounts of essential assistance from others. The worst thing I can imagine is to be 80 years old and completely alone. Not having those small but necessary supports could send everything else crashing down.

The fact that I tend to alienate people isn't in my favor.

Oleg Karavaichuk, a Shostakovich student who worked mostly in film because that was all the KGB would allow, has died at 88.
Some considered him a genius and a martyr. He lived with his mother, dressed in beret and galoshes in all weathers and was viewed by the authorities as half-mad.

ofcourse those who do better in life are not as likely to be diagnosed, that screws the numbers too
