I get where you're from with struggling to shop for clothes, especially in settings where you rely heavily on shopkeepers. It can feel intimidating, and I've had my share of awkward experiences. What helped me was creating a mental checklist before heading out, knowing exactly what colors, styles, or even specific items I needed. This takes away some of the stress of engaging with the salesperson. Also, if you're unsure about fabrics or fits, keep the receipt and politely ask about return policies. Sometimes, people are more sociable than we expect.

I don’t like clothes shopping and as it’s not in my daily routine, I forget about it till I really have nothing to wear. I but only basic clothes that are comfortable (this is a must) and I but 2-3 pairs of same or almost same items. I’m also happy to buy something in second hand but it’s harder to find multiple pieces of same clothes.

When I was a third grader, my mother bought my clothes and I wore them not knowing any difference.

Now that I'm in my 70s, I dress like I wanted to dress in third grade.

At the urging of my partner I started to wear better clothes in my 40s.
It took years learning how to select clothes for myself.

In my life I have bought
A pair of black corduroy stovepipes in 1980 UK
A leather bike jacket in SF in 1998
Several gig T-shirts
All my boots and shoes.

Everything else was gifted, home made, or bought by my GF of the time.

To buy clothes I tend to first look for the style I am looking for on internet then at the store just pick the ones that match that style.

No need to use social skills which I don't have.

I buy some cloths online because they're cheaper &/or easier to find.

I wear shoes with vecro due to problems with fine motor-skills & lots of shoe stores do not sell vecro shoes for adults. I also had ingrown toenails a few times on my big toes so I get shoes that are wider. There only seems to be one major brand that makes vecro shoes for for adults in wider sizes which is New Balance. I know my shoe size so when my shoes get very worn I'll check on Amazon & eBay & order wherever is cheaper.

With long pants I have a weird waist & length size combo that's hard to find at the stores(though I've been losing a bit of weight in the last couple years) & it's easier to find jeans in my size on Amazon. I only wear jeans when going outside in cold weather & I change into shorts after I get home so a couple pairs last me a very long time.

With shirts I wear a plain short sleeved white V-neck T-shirt party due to sensory issues & I can buy a pack on Amazon for cheaper than what I can find at WalMart.

I can usually buy a pack of white underwear & socks on Amazon for cheaper than what WalMart has. I should start being a tad pickier about the brands because I've had socks start ripping near the heel after wearing them a few times & the socks were not super tight on my feet.

When going out in cold weather I'll wear a jacket on top my T-shirts. Jackets can last me a long time due to not wearing them much but the zippers sometimes start malfunctioning after a while & finding new jackets can be a pain so I put it off as much as I can. I usually check stores to see which brand & type I may want & then check online for that in my size.

The biggest problem I have buying cloths is finding short pants with elastic that have deep pockets. I usually check various stores & get discouraged. I'm thinking I need to stat wearing something like a purse when I go out in warmer weather to carry my phone, wallet, & multi-tool & such because I lost my wallet on the bus last year due to my shorts pockets not being deep enough. I also do not have much of waist so I have to tie the elastic super tight for my shorts to not risk falling down when carrying most anything in my pockets. I have to have my belt super tight as well when wearing jeans for the same reason. When I can barely stick one finger inside the front of my pants/shorts, they're loose enough in back where I can stick both of my fists in the back.

I have my mom's blue jeans that she wore when she was fifteen. It has a size 27 inch waist. They still fit me!

I have some much newer Levi jeans shorts that are size 26 inch waist that also fit me.

I'm wearing an lilac Orvis size 2 short that fits well and has quality design and construction, far better than I've seen in any pair of boy's shorts.

The only way to know if clothes would look good on you is to try them on. Every brand and every design fit differently even if you're the perfect size. I used to love shopping at thrift stores. But all the stores here got rid of their fitting rooms since the pandemic, so I don't go there any more. Nowadays I mostly pick up stuff from Costco as they have good return policy. Or online stores with good return policy. Try to avoid the fast fashion clothes. They're cheap for a reason and rarely look good on anybody.

Not because I don't know what I want but just because I can't be bothered looking for stuff

I literally walk in a shop and straight back out a lot of the time

I like Primark because when I go up the escalator, I can look over the top and I have a birdseye view of the women's section on the floor below

I actually don't. I have a good imagination so can successfully pick out clothes in stores that go really nice together and I get honest compliments from fashion-conscious NT women.

The only thing is I can be lazy, so I'd often just pick two things out of my wardrobe not caring whether they matched or not and then get a lecture from my mum "you aren't going out like that!"

I've always struggle buying women's jeans for me because I like them really low cut but these days they all pull up too flipping high

I can't function in such attire
