Why do you care if it's "NT-approved" or not? It's YOUR special interest, no one has the right to tell you what you can/can't have a special interest regardless of neurotype.

Because I want to blend in with NTs

Why?

Because most people are NT and getting along with them is required if you want to participate in society.

Agreed And sometimes , in order to get ahead in Society is to be good at masking ...in order to get into better positions of Work and other stuff. ...At times ... Even in the USA inspite of what your societal programming is ?
Not all people are accepting of others differences . Not all People are Equal .In the eyes of practicing Psychopaths, I fear

I can get being protective of a special interest and worrying about being made fun of for it. Which is why I am pretty selective about talking about them, outside of the internet. In fact, this is some of the reason I don't talk much at work, because many years ago, I got myself in trouble for talking too much.

That all said, Frost Bender seems to want to totally conform to being an NT, which if you are on the spectrum, it won't take long for you to burnout fast. I admit I mask sometimes without thinking about it, mostly just to get by in the workplace. Which I need to survive.

However, I've reached the point in my life, where the days of apologizing for me being me are gone and I refuse to play pretend just in order to "have friends".

I think that's a very fascinating interest that you have. I don't find it strange at all.

I think that is a fantastic special interest. Does it matter if nts would approve? I understand you not wanted to be thought of as weird but I can't imagine that you would be thought of as weird for doing what you are doing. But either way, I think what you are doing is really cool.

I only will openly admit a special interest if NTs would like it.

I think you would have a seizure if I let you in my shed.
Especially since I would let you take almost anything you wanted for free.
I may not still have my PDP8 or 11, nor the ASR-33 Teletype and Singer model 40 disk drive that RAN ON 3-PHASE and had 64 bytes of core memory and took 2 foot disk packs.

They were left behind during many house moves.
But you're welcome to the Zx-81, the Ferguson big board.. the boxes of ISA cards, and IDE drives.
SCSI controllers and drives...the retro blue PC Mac imitation. AT power supplies.
The original 20 Mb IBM hard drive, floppy drives. The 486s

My partner would thank you for it.

I'm keeping the black and white reel to reel video camera and the colour video recorder with the cartridge reels mounted one stop the other. I was an electronics tech before I got into IT support.

The downside?.. you need to be close to Melbourne Australia

As the resident WP Neurotypical I approve your special interest (if that helps).
there's plenty of nts who are into restoring old stuff and its quite trendy actually.
