I was the same way...I didn't have many problems socializing with adults when I was a kid.

I remember socializing some with other kids but never for extended periods of time...after awhile they either bored me or irritated me to the point of anger. Usually the later.

The sorta of game play that I did as a child was kinda bizarre and fascinating to adults. Most of the adults I was around then were hippies, and i was a weirdo art kid. I got along better with boys than girls.
When I was very little, I was extremely social..I had no concept of boundaries. I would randomly show up at people's houses because I kinda wandered wildly around the neighborhood. I walked to and from school by myself when I was in kindergarten. I remember once just randomly deciding to pay a visit to my uncles house after school, so I started wandering randomly in the direction of where he lived.
I got lost, and when I finally made it home, my mom was mad at me. I would often find random groups of kids and try to join up with them. I became more introverted as I grew older.
I don't know if it was because of AS, PTSD, or a combination thereof.

I too, was told that I was very social, popular and out going as a child. However, that was really only until middle school. I also preferred to hangout and have conversations w/ my parent’s friends. They were always impressed by my huge vocabulary, vast knowledge of many different things, and critically aware of current events (I watch the news and read the NY Times in grade school). When I was 12, I took it upon myself to study various religions, esp. eastern religions. I questioned the existence of GOD form the age of five. It seemed absurd to me that adults could believe in some person w/a beard sitting in sky. It was akin to believing in Santa Clause. I was considered a "little professor". I do remember feeling different though and through tantrums if my mother made the slightest change to my organizational structure of my room and it's contents. I frequently questioned my parents if I acted correctly when we would go out. Nevertheless, according to my parents, they thought I advanced...but typically normal as a young child. This was a continuing debate in regard to having been diagnosed w/ Asperger’s.

Ok, not sure if their were prior posts concerning this, but I recently got back from a trip to my old neghborhood where I lived when I was little. Their were many ppl who even after 16 years recognized me, and told me some pretty bizzar stories about me, stuff i do not recollect. Apparently they said I was very talkative, active and friendly, at least when little. Im sure they noticed now as an adult im a bit more reserved, quiet. Then I saw this video of me when I was 4 in the summer of 1987, it was a back yard party at my parents house and indeed, I was extreamly active. I did not play with the other children tho oddly enough, I was all about socializing with the grownups. They must have thought I was weird cause during the movie I was the loudest one, and yet the smallest, and was running around wildly in all directons, whoever was running the camera kept aim at me while I was running around talking and singing into an invisible microphone, then I would come and make my rounds with the adults...

Anyone have a similar story?

I have a video of me when I was four years old also...

I was at kindergarden and we were joined with other kindergardens to share our "performances" for the "graduation".
Anyway, while the other kids from other kindergardens put on their show, all of the other kids were watching and I was too busy fixated on the way my shoes had been tied. When the show was over and it was our turn to go on stage, I refused to get on stage because my shoes were tied the "wrong" way...
I have always been more sociable with adults as I find that they are more interested in what I have to say that people of my own age, which is 16. And even when I was a toddler I would always "ignore" the other children and want to "read" the newspaper with the adults. Of course I would only look at the pictures

I played with other kids when I was little and I hated playing by myself. I also talked to grownups too when I was a little girl. I talked to anyone. Then when I was 10, I started to have problems with kids my age. I started to have troubles socializing with them because they didn't want to play with toys anymore or play on the playground equipment. They said they were too old for it and they were in a rush to grow up so I headed for younger peers and started playing with the younger kids in my neighborhood. Then I became antisocial as I got older. I prefer to be by myself and find it hard to be with other grown ups. I'd rather find ones who have the same things in common with me. Luckily the men I have met in my adulthood all let me did what I wanted and they went along with it. That made the socializing easy for me and I felt so NT. My mother hated it though because all these men weren't normal to her because they were all into diapers. Yet I still got diagnosed with AS. :? Maybe because I was bossy as a little girl and kids used me for my stuff and I was inflexible to playing because everything had to be my way and they had to play my way.

I was far more social when I was little, I think maybe I knew it was expected of me. I do remember enjoying myself but birthday parties often ended in tears when the other children would not obey my commands! I was quite popular but around the age of 6 became the focus of the teasers. So I had a couple of friends my main friend was very eccentric we played side by side. I never felt quite right with my peers and often preferred to be alone or in the company of adults.
The problems erupted at 11 when I attended secondary school, I was a fish out of water, other girls were into pop bands and boys while I was still into my tills and adding machine. Difference is not accepted at this age and I became easy prey for the bullies. I remember hating lunch time trying to latch onto a group, sitting alone felt terrible. One autumnal lunch hour I was sat in the playground against the gym building when I was hit by a hockey ball, it cracked into my ankle. I was quite pleased the hockey players were handsome 15 year old senior guys for some bizarre reason I thought they would become my friends! But no. These were lonely times. After that we moved due to my dads job, I went to an all girls grammar school I did'nt have any real friends there until the sixth form.

My main connections were with animals and nature. I fed ants and called my cat my mama.

I was very sociable in the first few years of school, somehow even got class captain a few times. Then somewhere I lost track of how to communicate well with my peers and became very introverted, and wanted to spend most of my time in solitude.

When I was at playgroup I didn't speak to other children at all, only the adults. I was pretty much the same at my first school, but at the same time, I think people just accepted me as being independent. I wasn't actively disliked until my family moved when I was eight.

Didn't become socialable again until I started drinking at 16!

I can honestly say I wasn't social when I was little. I did occasionally have one or two friends, but for the most part, I wasn't social at all. I was never around anyone my own age until I was 6 years old and went to school. My parents claimed there were no kids in the neighborhood, so I was confined to the house and rarely went outside to play.

I always wondered what it was like to have friends my own age to share my interests with, but it wasn't to be. The few times I did make friends, my sister always knew how to find common ground with them and they often ended up ignoring me and being her friends instead of mine. The fact she was so good at stealing my friends always hurt, and still does sometimes. She had plenty of friends of her own in fact, more than I ever did, but she wouldn't be content until she had all the friends and I had none.

I always thought my lack of socialization may have caused alot of my lifelong social issues but now, I know it is something more.

I was sociable 'til things like team sports started to become involved, probably at 6 or 7. It was quickly apparent that my coordination was appalling for that sort of thing, and from that point on I had very few friends, 'til I got to secondary school, and was 14. Then the building I was in had a separate building for the music department, and as music was what I was primarily involved in, I made friends there. Most of us were very focussed - I think of my year, 6 of us went on to study music, which is a very high rate - and the others were mostly female, I think they were more forgiving of me. You could also escape to practice rooms to play piano or another instrument if you didn't want to talk to people, and no one would take it as a slight. So there was a short period where I wasn't all that social, and in secondary school I had a very small group of friends, but I was social with them.

Yes I was more social as a child. I think. But I was also more oblivious to how I was actually behaving.

I had no problem with kids wanting to play with me up to about the age of 7. After that, the kids my age usually didn't want to play with me. I ended up playing with the kids who were younger than me, or I visited with with adults.

Guess what my mom told me on the phone tonight? First a little background... I asked her if she remembered how picky I was about my clothes when I was growing up, how tags bothered me, and how I'd throw a fit if a shirt had a band in it that touched my waist and how clothes had to fit me just so-so. She said she didn't remember that in particular (OMG I threw such big fits, how could she forget!?!?) but she did say "You were ONE.............. WEIRD................ KID!! !" She emphasized it like that.

I had her on speaker phone when we were talking and my husband was sitting next to me. He heard what she said and we both looked at each other and our jaws dropped!! ! We just stared at each other like "WTF!??" It's like the older my mom gets, the more she just lets loose with her thoughts and tells it like it is. But I was glad that my mom made that declaration because it's just further proof to me that I am indeed not NT. I'm not weird on purpose, I'm weird because I am wired neurologically different.
