As a kid I was told i always avoided eye contact, as I got older after the teen years, i got better because I had to realize its importance in conveying sencerety, confidence, truth ect...

I feel very uncomfortable looking people in the eyes, i dont know if im glairing, i dont know if im not making enough contact, so if its a discussion even tho i look down on the floor quite a bit (to this day :? ) I still make it when i talk, dont like it, but feel it is nessissary if the conversation or discussion needs it.

I hate eye contact unless it's with adults I've known for a lot of years or people my own age that I've known for a while. Apparently even when I do make eye contact it's not 'right' - I've been told I scare people by staring too much.

I have a real hard time making real eye contact, millisecond glances is the best I can do usually.

There are some people who have a genuinely loving look in their eyes, with who I can't release eye contact once I established it, its like the typical zoning out a lot of us aspies do, but locked on to those eyes, not some random spot of nothingness.

When that happens I usually get called on it that I'm staring though :p not really good either.

I'm not as good with eye contact as an NT person, but it isn't one of my more noticeable traits. It causes some mild discomfort, but I can manage that fairly well.

I do the millisecond glance thing too.

I hate eye contact...and while I am at it, i hate the phone..

I can make eye contact maily with people who I am comfortable with, most of whom are not big on eye contact either.

I had eye contact issues during my childhood and adolescence.

About ten years ago I decided that I needed to correct this AS defect. It was a challenge but I have managed to overcome this AS peculiarity.

Yes, there are times it is difficult to maintain proper eye contact, but I manage. Thankfully, I never developed the other extreme focusing my eyes on others to the point of staring or making them uncomfortable.

Windows into my Soul

Inside the shell is Self
Hanging on a ledge
Forgotten on a shelf
Dusty with snapped bindings
Spine broken awash in flame
But no water to quench the shame
The sadness
The slowness
The fever
The pain.
I don't want to be seen
Behind the facade, wall and screen
Let rain just fall, world change, born and dying
In my mind I twirl, laugh and spin without trying
In those rare still moments - my view
Behind shades, low caps, hair - hiding
From scrutiny, scrutinizers, questioners, you.

I have no problem with eye contact, but I am often unsure how long to maintain it before it becomes "staring".

I used to stare a lot as a kid. I'd use eye contact as a defence mechanism. One person who used to be a tutor of mine at an adult learning college used to say I could look right through people. It freaked her out till she got to know me because she said it gave her the feeling I was seeing something in people that other people couldn't.

I guess according to the general list of AS symptoms I was supposedly seeing less than others. And my "cold dead stare" was actually just me not expressing or emoting like an NT would.

I went through a stage of wearing sunglasses for a while though. 8)

I do. If someone is just saying a few words to me I can glance at them and make eye contact, but if they then decide to approach me and talk then I have trouble making any eye contact. I just feel really uncomfortable in that situation.

I used to worry about not making eye contact often enough, but now i think that people don't actually maintain eye contact as thoroughly as I once assumed. You can drift in and out of it and even use it to add a "bullet" to a statement your making, kind of like a subtle verbal exclamation point.

Edit: I'll add that it seems very important to make eye contact when asking a direct question of someone, so I guess it can be a question mark as well. Tomorrow I'll try using eye contact as other, more exotic forms of punctuation. Maybe a tilde?

In some cultures looking at someone directly is perceived as a direct threat...so maybe it's something to be used judiciously....

If I don't know the person I'm talking to, I'm very uncomfortable with eye-contact. I've gotten better with the years, though... I hate talking in the phone, btw.

I do the millisecond glance thing, too. It's impossible to maintain "normal" eye-contact. I never know exactly where to look or how long.
