I would use public transportation if it served my needs. Here in Rochester, I would ride the bus if I worked at the Mayo Clinic or another downtown location, otherwise you cannot get anywhere on the bus.

In NYC or Boston, The only way to get around is by public transportation. To depend on a car is almost insane in those cities.

Public transport is a hit or miss situation. I would usually much prefer to drive, but in some places where public transport is actually good, (a rarity in the US) public transport isn't a bad thing. On the other hand, if you live in a place where public transport sucks, it's barely endurable.

In some cities, like Boston, New York, San Francisco, taking public transport is the best option, due to the fact that you can park outside of the city, and ride in, without having to deal with the issues of heavy traffic, or finding curbside or garage parking inside the city.

I live in manchester, so the public transport is ok (industrial city, industrial history, very good rail links, plus the metrolink), so I either use trains, metro or walk........

 I loathe and despise taking the bus! I had to take it for five years and hardly got anything accomplished with my life that time due to lack of transportation. This site does not have angry enough looking emoticons to show how I feel about it.

A bus is only useful as it gets me from point A to point B. Past that I can't tolerate them, too noisy, too crowded...

For me, it's al of SpaceCase's reasons, plus, it's full of crackheads and illegal aliens, you have to keep your hand over the pocket with your wallet in it, there are potentially dangerous people on it, they run up to three hours late, they break down, there's no bus stops close to where you live or need to go, the people are stupid and annoying, if you have to transfer they are either an hour apart or so close together that you frequently miss it and have to wait another hour for the next one...

I'm a captive audience, because I have no choice: I don't have a car, can't afford one, and don't drive anymore, anyway. I have to take public transportation (elevated train) to and from work every day, and I often take it on weekends if I need to get somewhere. Some of the train lines are less scary than others, but overall, it's a pretty gross and very taxing experience. Can't afford to cab around town, either, so I just suck it up...

Come on, the Orange Line is actually kind of nice. The Blue Line isn't bad. I avoid the others like the plague. (And mostly the only reason I take the Blue Line anywhere is because I live near the Addison stop, otherwise I probably wouldn't do that one, either) The Orange Line is nice, though. Too bad it doesn't go anywhere.

On a side note, I think that streetcars and trolleybuses were so much better than the modern diesel buses. They were electric, and therefore non-polluting; most of them ran 24 hours; and they had a more permanent presence than diesel buses, due to the fact that they ran on tracks and/or required overhead wires.

Does anyone else agree with me?

LOL!! ! Orange Line = I need to get to Midway, otherwise, I'm never in any type of situation where I'd need it. Blue Line = I need to get to O'Hare or (once in a blue moon) to someplace in Wicker/Bucktown; otherwise, see above. Brown/Purple Lines = not *too* disgusting, thank goodness, as I need one or both of 'em every weekday for the final leg of my journey to work. Red Line = the necessary eeeeeeeevil that I must endure EVERY DAY in all its stinking, disturbing, surreal grandeur, for work and otherwise. Sucks to be me! :P

Your cousin's a train driver here in Chi? Wow, cool! :D Erm...I wouldn't think they'd seem as bad to someone who's not actually forced to sit/stand among the passengers, though, hahaha!

*DOOMP*, *DOOMP*, *DOOMP*........ Another one rides the busss

Yeah, In the 6th grade my stepfather dropped me off smack in the middle of a bus stop at the front of my old primary school. As I was getting my school bag from out of the trunk, a huge-looking coach suddenly swerved over at the bus stop and parked less than a metre behind my back. The coach driver blew his horn in frustration, and I screamed........AAAAAAAAAHHHHHHHHHHHHHH!! !! !!

The school kids that went off the bus teased me terribly because of my screaming.

What they didn't realise was that the coach that they were riding almost rode me up the ass.

I have never taken public transportation by myself in my entire life. It freaks me out. Though I don't think I'd have as hard a time with public trans over in Europe because it's my understanding EVERYONE takes it. Over here and especially around where I live, it is not well kept. I prefer to avoid it in the future at all costs.
