One problem with looking for a pattern is that the medical community has changed its ideas about when to remove tonsils. When I was young in the 1960s, docs were eager to yank them out if there was any swelling. Since then, they have decided that the tonsils have a beneficial function in the body, and they are much more reluctant to remove them, although they will if there are severe problems.

But as far as allergies and the immune system go, I think there is something of a connection to AS.

My tonsils were surgically removed out of necessity.

No tonsils. No Sylvian Fissure.
Disclaimer: The above two anatomical features are not correlated in any way nor am I implying they are/were surgically associated either.

I've got everything I came into the world with, and they aren't getting any of it out of me without heavy sedation. ;)

Still got my tonsils, but had an adenoidectomy when I was 11.

I sorta wish my tonsils were gone though.. I keep getting throat infections almost on a bi-weekly basis at this time of year :P

OK - I had mine taken out - nobody asked me - they were infected and that was the thing to do at the time. Recently I read this book Colon Health can't remember the physician's name - but he wrote some really interesting things about the tonsils and their REAL function in the body's system - and having them gone creates a whole slew of issues - specifically lack of motivation, focus and spaciness together with chronic fatigue. Which I know aren't tell-tale signs of SA - but....I was curious to hear how many of us actually had the procedure done.

I don't even think they are symptoms of SA, but they aren't for AS. BTW I still have my tonsils also. BTW NO organs removed!

Wow! Interesting...I was just talking to my husband about this the other day...First of all, yes I did have one...so no tonsils here...or adenoids...with that said...

I was reading about the adenoids the other day and their function...of course, related to the immune system...Well, geez...aren't the tonsils the same??? There was a recent article in yahoo news about the appendix and how scientists have discovered that there is indeed a relation between the appendix and the gut...basically, having it allows the good bacteria in your gut...without it, your bad bacteria can take over (and probably does)...THEY JUST FOUND THIS OUT? How outrageous!! ! Ok, anyway, at the end of the article it said that they were going to look into the tonsils, because maybe they would ALSO find out there was actually a reason for them...DUH!! ! I have always felt that everything in your body has a function, otherwise, it wouldn't be there...of course, the doctors all claimed that wasn't so...

So, although again I don't believe that autism is ONLY caused by not having your tonsils, etc...I DO very strongly believe that autism is a genetic disorder (for lack of a better term) and that by having a weak immune system, things such as NO Tonsils, NO adenoids, etc...cause your system to be even weaker...then you take modern day environmental toxins and you have just pushed the autism over the edge...which is WHY we are seeing more diagnosis...Not because autism did not exist, but because the immune system of more people is being affected who were genetically predisposed to autism anyway...

Ok, no, I'm not a doctor, just my 2 cents worth...

I had my tonsils out.

I still have my appendix.

I've had half my thyroid taken out because of a lump they thought was cancer.

Not sure if any of this has anything to do with anything, but there are my stats. :)

I have both my tonsils and my adenoids, but no appendix.
My dad had his tonsils taken out once, and his adenoids taken out twice (they grew back after the first time)

Interesting question - something I've always wondered, my son had ear/nose/throat probs from a baby. Eventually had his tonsils and adenoids removed when he was 10

I had my appendix removed when i was 16.

Anyway i think there maybe some connection between tonsils and motivation. I am using personal therapy with polarized light already a few years, mostly for hayfever (mostly red & blue color). I have tried to illuminate various parts of body. The point below jaw, just where head is changing to throat, on the body axis, has specific effect. My motivation, feeling of happiness even self-assurance is great. Dont understand this but what i said is for sure. My intuition tell me that tonsils and adenoids can be something like input gate for air ions. If you have not heard about ions i will tell you very shortly - ions are very very small electrically charged particles floating around us in air. I believe they are essence of vitality based on my experience with a couple of commercial ionisers. Same researchers even say that animals will die when feeded in totally de-ionized air. Unfortunately there is problem to buy ioniser with both positive & negative ions output in my country (bipolar ioniser as opposed to unipolar ioniser which emits only ions with one polarity). For wellbeing you need both positive and negative ions (which to my knowing is in contrast with generally opinion). One more thing. Regarding ionizers I have found that i can obtain practically identical results with specifical form of pranayama (ancient breath technique). Inhaling through left nostril and exhaling with right nostril (- breathing) is the same as beeing in room with negative ioniser turned on. I guess that opposite breathing technique (inhaling through right nostril and exhaling through left nostril or + breathing) is the same as to breath positive ions. I found as most effective to combine nadi sodhana (which combines + & - breathing) with - breathing. Quality of my sleep improved from first night, i am also very calm. Maybe left & right side should be changed if you are right-handed (i am left handed). Also critically important is to guess correct time period for - breathing. I have found that 13-14 minutes daily is optimal for me, time needed for nadi sodhana is not so important (generally the more the better). Be careful with these experiments!
