I really wonder what bad is. I mean I am not great, but I am learning, slowly but surely. Yet MANY seem to be far worse! Just today, on the radio, a guy say it would take like the whole night to subtract two 2 digit numbers.

Like with anything, for me it's more about getting into a repetitive process and knowing what to exspect with a math problem. I wasn't able to pass math classes until I had my younger brother, who does very well in math, help me and explain everything step by step until I got it. Fortunately in college I found a teacher who does this as well and gives variations and examples of each type of problem so that I know what to exspect and don't get anxious about new things coming up.

I am terrible at math, or anything that requires heavy memorisation for that fact. I can do basic calculations - hence I've done accounting, and that is pretty much the extent of my mathematical know-how that I require.

I have a mathematical block. Unless the numbers apply to something, they're meaningless to me and it all looks like Chinese (I don't read Chinese). I'm doing well in my Statistics course, averaging a solid B. I kicked butt at Physics. Give me a flat out math problem though and forget it, my mind shuts down.

I wouldn't say I'm horrible at math, considering I'm the one who handles the bills and check book in our household. I also have no problem taking care of billing and invoicing my business, or pricing things to sell. However, I can't do algebra or anything like that. It just gets too confusing to me. But maybe I just never got interested enough to actually learn how to do it. :)

Failed algebra the first time. Got an A+ in geometry. I think it's something to do with the abstract-ness of algebra that makes it incredibly difficult for me.

I'm awesome at algebra. I can do complex algebraic equations faster than most of my more math savvy friends. All other math, however, I'm awful at. I get really frustrated because of how slow I am with anything besides algebra.

I was supposed to get a guitar for my birthday or something at somepoint and my mom's jerk of a boyfriend at the time gave me a math problem and said if I didn't solve it I didn't get the guitar. I wasn't really able to tell if he was serious or not, so I spent forever trying to figure this thing out and I eventually just gave up and started to cry. I eventually got the guitar, but I really hate that guy.

"Children with the nonverbal learning disorder type of hyperlexia overlap with Asperger's kids, who have a very low social perception. The characteristics of the nonverbal language disorder hyperlexia are deficits in visual spatial organization, fine motor coordination and math. "

From this site: http://www.hyperlexia.org/aha_winter9697.html

And yes, anything above fractions makes absolutely no sense to me. Especially geometry. *shudders*

Ooo, that's me. I just have this wave of "oh god I really am stupid" come over me and after that, even my eyes don't work right.

I am really good at dominoes though, and I don't know why....i can beat just about anybody...(unless they are letting me win)....at least I could...it has been years since the old domino parties..I would always clean up against a buncha guys...
I don't know what my mind is doing or if it is just luck...it seems to be an uncanny knack, but there must be some kinda mathematical thinking going on my my rusty little brain...

but anytime I go to a resturaunt and we are asked "how many"...I notice that i always have to stop and think a little longer than someone ought to for a party of 3

I am the master of word problems and math "puzzlers" if that counts for anything. I was the math champion of my school but not from being really smart I just atribute it to divergent thinking, thinking outside of the box on problems that can't be tackled from a formula or just following examples.

this is kind of my weird knack because most of the time i find math really boring and uninteresting but if there's a challenging problem, I find it stimulating and fun.

sometimes it is said that AS makes you have trouble with algebra?? so maybe it really makes you worse at math and its just the interest in technical stuff like math that made the stereotype.

I'm something probably not AS but still this is kind of interesting because if you twisted this stereotpype enough, I could probably fit the nerd aspie stereotype when it comes to math. not too many people seem to find word problems fun.

wow I got really off topic but yeah thats how it goes sometimes sorry about that

My last BF ought to read this thread. He will see not all aspies are good with math.

If someone asked me "Is it true that people with Aspergers are good with math?"
I'd say "Some are, some aren't, same with normal people."

I'm bad with math too but I can do the basic math but algebra I can't. All those formulas confuse me. I could never understand geoometry or other types of math except for what i learned in elementary school I was just getting the hang of fractions at the end of sixth grade and then school got out and we move to Montana and bam the kids in my grade were already doing negative numbers and algebra. They were way ahead of me. Wished I told my BF that before back when we were together and still talking. He was right, they shouldn't have dropped the course for me and give me basic math. They should have given me other math from the lower grade levels so I learn all the steps so I could catch up from what the students had already learned just like I had to do first grade school work when I was 8 so I could catch up in education due to being in special ed for two years without inclusion.

most early formulas are just plain unecessary or just redundant. example: they could teach you that the distance formula is just the pythagorean theorem for example and make you a smarter person for connecting two things. but no you have to memorize a jumble of x1, x2 whatever on top of the PT.
