I used to rollerskate all the time as a child. I was fairly athletic, but never a jock. I walked, ran, rollerskated and rode a bike. I was also able to traverse the monkey bars on the playground like a real monkey. When sports became organized, I did lousy.

I can rollerblade, but I can't use the brakes. Seriously. The only way I can stop is to just let myself slow down naturally. The thought of tilting my foot backward to use the break completely terrifies me. When I used to rollerblade, I would generally just do it in a nearby parking lot, where I could go in circles. The one time I tried to rollerblade to the pharmacy, which is downhill, I kept having to steer into benches or parking meters every few feet to stop myself from gaining too much momentum on the hill. Yeah, I'm sure *that* looked normal.

I have an awkward walk, etc. but when it comes to using sporting equipment, ball, bike, roller blades, etc. I'm a natural. My first bike had one pedal, I mastered that thing in no time! My parents where happy they didn't feel compelled to buy a new bike.

I don't like roller skates however, never liked the balance they put you in. If you're going down on them you're going down.

Roller Blades (good ones, NOT cheap brands - you get what you pay for) put you into a position where you are better balanced. So long as they are snug (fit is very important) you keep your knees slightly bent you're good to go. The people I see falling on those usually wear them too big or don't have them tied tightly enough. Course they could have AS too...

When I was 7 I first learn't how to rollerskate...I wasn't very good but still enjoyed it.
I haven't tried since I was about 11.
Although I did go ice skating last year and that went fairly well...I only fell over once.

Sort of. I have to wear gloves and a padded rear shield if I'm on pavement.

Did some rollerskating in early HS... but was really not good at it. I'm not any better with rollerblades or ice skates.

How ironic that this was brought up today. My son's first roller skating party was today and sadly, his first time roller skating. I should have taken him earlier I know. But Iwas 7 when I learned how to skate. My husband was really good as a kid, but was awkward tonight. My son was terrible and he about had a tantrum when we were trying to direct him. But there were other kids that were just as bad as him.
I wasn't so good but I did skate for about 7 years regularly.

It seemed like it took me longer than everyone else I knew, but I caught on. I think that I attempted ice skating first, and that experience probably helped when learning to quadskate.

I've also learned how to;
Skateboard.
Snowboard.
Alpine ski.
Nordic ski.
A bunch of other things too.

And I learned how to ride a bike probably around the time I learned how to quadskate. Each time, I researched it, focused on doing it, and then just did it. Typical methodology. The only one the above that I've yet to master is ice skating (because of those damm figure skates that don't provide any ankle support). My focus when learning how to ride things with wheels made each new discipline that much easier for me to catch on.

um...

I learned at a realtively early age...I was only a little older than the age that other kids seemed to learn.
I enjoyed going to the roller rink when i was a kid. It was totally worth the raging headache and the teasing that always happened. I was somewhat less athletic than my younger sister and her peers, but I liked zoning out and just skating.
I always wanted to ice skate, and I went once with girl scouts, and spent the entire time clinging to the edge of the rink (where the ice is softer)

I don't necc. think it is an AS thing, but I have always been alot slower and clumsier than those around me. So I was kinda lousy at it, but not for want of trying.
I enjoyed rollerblading and once I learned how I went rollerblading in the park a couple of times with some roomates who totally outlapped me...it has been years though.
I am definitely not roller derby material.

Yeah, for those of you who mentioned bike riding, it took me til I was 9 to learn. That was after my father had given up on me back when I was six.
