The word troll is a reference to the action of "trolling" in fishing lingo. An internet troll is someone who's fishing, or baiting for negative reactions. Trolls go out of their way to intentionally stir up arguments, upset people and cause controversy. They see other people's internet forums as their own personal playground with little concern for the feelings of others.

BTW which threads were started by trolls? I haven't seen any (or maybe I'm just oblivious as usual!)

Possibly. Trolling, to the piscator, is the technique of trailing a bait or lure behind a moving boat. It's a much maligned tactic, in a UK context, just like its internet analogue. There are two ways of approaching trolling: the first is to present a bait as naturally as possible, so that it looks like an injured fish moving through the water, and so does not cause suspicion. The quarry will, hopefully, gulp it down without a second thought! That's similar, I suggest, to presenting a specious argument to draw someone in to a dialogue. The second, is very different. One presents an artificial lure to look very unnatural. The idea being to spark the fish into an aggressive attack on something it may perceive as a threat -- it can be very effective! That can be compared to presenting an argument that is downright provocative, or overtly fallacious, in the hope of triggering an explosive response.

The inflammatory ones. Ones that get a really extreme reaction from the reader. Ones pitting one group against another. Ones with overt sexual innuendos. The ones that use guilt trips in the subject line. Ones that put down some one by name.

I'm going to leave it to your imagination which ones those are.

I say things like "pissed off" all the time, its not a swear word here and it doesn't get filtered, so he didn't need to censor it did he?
