Okay, it's time for a new installment of Revenge of the Nerds. This time, let's have them all diagnosed with some neurological issue. OCD, Asperger Disorder, HFA, schizotypal personality disorder, schizoid personality, the whole nine yards. We'll show them all coping with their own issues in their own special ways, all that good stuff.

I am not sure if it is possible to draw a hard and fast line between the two.

A common justification for sexism was that women were supposedly weak. They were often called "the fairer sex." Therefore, the traits which were socially defined as distinguishing women from men were used against women to keep them "in their place."

I'm an NT but never once bullied anyone, and was often the victim of a lot of teasing and taunting from other students. This came from the fact I stood up for aspies, as well as other outcast groups. May I point out it wasn't always the NT's I was fighting? People with Skitzotypical personality disorder, bipolor disorder, and even AS would often torment each other.

This sort of behavior of forming groups and fighting with others is constant with all people, not just NT's.

Oh, you were nice to people. There's got to be some neurological condition that describes. Hold on, I'll find out how to treat it and make you sociopathic and mean like normal people. LOL.

Yeah, having AS is no guarantee that a person is going to completely lack social aggression. Hell, we're known for being somewhat arrogant on our better days.

I assume that's sarcasm... It's hard to tell online.

Actually it's not Griff who's thinking about putting you in a category, it's his imagination picturing NT's categorizing you and then 'treating' you until you are as sociopathic as they are. I think in a way you've already encountered some of their 'medicine'.

I don't know what it's called, sarcasm, or cynicism or something else.

LostInSpace, you are contradicting yourself in your efforts to blame the victims. In reality the only trait shared by victims of bullying is their unequal position and the resulting inability to defend against the violence.

One of my worst bullies had fetal alcohol syndrome - many of the bullies (7 total) I encountered were not ideal neurotypicals, almost had their own issues including innate issues and/or a background of emotional abuse (read my thread on Stockholm syndrome - http://www.wrongplanet.net/postt47091.html).

No, I do not agree that "Neurotyicalism" bullies Aspies.

Bullying is dysfunctional behavior, a dynamic that is perpetrated by dysfunctional perpetrator that beats a weaker atypical victim. The bully... bullies... the victim to raise their own self-esteem and to give themself a sense of power, because the bully feels powerless and hopeless. They try to transfer their feelings of hopelessness and sadness onto someone else. A neurotypical doesn't need to do this. Furthermore, the few people that stood up for me were empathic and nurturing neurotypicals.

Any champagne to stop attacks on Aspies should be part of a general effort to prevent bullying and abuse in society, it involves education that dispels ignorance and demonstrates that the "victim" deserves equality, dignity and respect. It is not right label NTs with "Neurotypicalism", and use this general term that suggests that abusive behavior is expected from NT society given a chance. Aspies labeling NTs like this...err...sounds like just another -ism.

NT's aren't sociopaths. There are a lot of us who are kind and have never teased anyone. As for me I'm cynical because I have to be in order to protect myself. My brother who was either a *real* sociopath or an aspie sexually abused me for five years. You better believe I built up my defences! But, just because I can protect myself doesn't mean I'll hurt anyone emotionally or otherwise.

Um, okay. There are so many problems with this statement, that I think I'll just ignore it, unless you would like to explain yourself further. Try reading my post again- I think you really missed the point.

As a sociologist, I do not label people with ideologies. I attach those labels to societies in general.

If I say that the United States is a racist, sexist, ableist, ageist, heterosexist, and classic society, I do not mean that each and every American reflects bigoted attitudes. Ideologies permit certain behaviors, such as bullying, to continue without sufficient consequence. There is no assumption, however, that all members of a society will express discriminatory traits.

NT's aren't sociopaths.
I know! Sociopaths invariably think they're NTs, though!

Absolutely, so it's just as ridiculous for the creator of the OP to broadbrush NTs as the sociopathic vermin who once gave him hardship as it is to stereotype Aspies. NT is a large category, filled with rich diversity.

I exercise faith in humanity because it's literally the only thing standing between me and paranoid schizophrenia. My meltdowns have basically disappeared since developing this useful delusion.

You are blaming the victims of bullying for the bullying. You claim it is their behaviour that induces the violence aimed against them, to quote: "I would argue therefore that it is not the fact that you had Asperger's, but the presentation of your unusual behavior that motivated the children to bully you."

This isn't blaming the victim, it's giving a clear explanation as to why they're singled out. There's a reason for why people do evil things to others, it's not just a random choice, this is true in all forms of torture. AS kids are singled out for bullying because they behaive differently, and that's the honest truth. It's not their 'fault', it's just the way things are for right now, until things change.
