I don't hate it but I certainly feel uncomfortable around most of them. Around the holidays I show up, talk for a few minutes, then excuse myself and go watch TV alone or something. I refuse to go to family reunions though - those are absolute hell for me.

There are actually sections of Wrong Planet devoted to such subjects. For instance, I often post in the politics/religion section.

Oh nominalist - was referring to the original poster's convos with his/her relatives :) - because it works with me avoiding getting pigeon holed in triviality. Whenever one of my relatives tries to lure me into small talk, I'll usually tie something in like organic gardening or Picasso & before you know it we're off personal agendas and uncomfortable boundary crossings into discussing the joys of composting and variants of the color blue.

Oh, okay. ;-)

I almost never have any interesting discussions with my two closest relatives, my father and sister. My 88-year-old father is, I believe, an aspie with old-age dementia; and my sister has ADHD-I and no patience with people.

I think jjstar meant talking about that subject manner with the family. It would be kind of hard to converse those topics with your family on a forum. Haha.

Yep. I usually try not to reply to messages until I have had time to read them carefully, but I responded while I was getting ready to head to the office.

I like to visit my direct family, we are all about the same level of odd so no one really feels extra stressed. But I can't stand visiting extended family. All the questions about why I'm not working in a "career" since I always was so "bright". It's taken me until very recentely to accept where I work as being right for me (somewhere I can survive full time that doesn't trigger me), and I hate that my relatives want me to feel that I'm wasting my life.
