I have a tendency to stand with my arms crossed because it's comfortable. I have to work to remember that it's a "closed" posture that conveys the wrong non-verbal message.

I stand with arms crossed too. Then I'll think about it and put my hands in pockets but then go back to the crossed arms. Sometimes if in stores I walk with arms behind my back.

I'm going to try to go a whole day tomorrow with my hands down to my side just to see if I can do it. Also try not to have one hand balled up. It's turned into a physical challenge.

Do you have large knuckles now? I think she meant that females don't like large knuckles. She was trying to make you stop through trickery.

I just try to do something normal with my hands. I put them in my pockets, cross my arms, etc. I change positions a lot because I'm always thinking, "That probably looks weird. Maybe this is right." I observe what other people are doing with their hands and try to do the same without making it exactly identical. I've read that this is what you are supposed to do.

Usually the other hand in a fist while sitting.

I really have trouble with my hands while standing. I used to walk around arms crossed or both hands in a fist, but the comments made me stop. Nowadays they're always in the pockets. Always.

I sleep with arms crossed.

Haha that's so silly. I did karate as a kid so I have large knuckles from that anyway, so it doesn't worry meeee. Though I was told it'd give you arthritis, but meh. I'm sure it doesn't.

No, I don't think they're very large, but it's hard to tell because I have fat hands.
Also, I'm pretty sure she meant what she said. She showed me her enormous knuckles and said that they would look like hers and that girls wouldn't like it because they're supposed to have small hands.

I don't know about karate giving you arthritis. Probably no more than any other rough physical activities. I do know that repetitive impact thickens bones, which probably explains the larger knuckles.

Haha, sorry - I meant they say that cracking your knuckles gives you arthritis. Karate doesn't; probably the opposite actually, it makes you all bendy and strong!! But yes, constantly hitting punching bags does give you pretty big knuckles. Doesn't worry me though.

Oh, that's what I thought you meant at first, but when I reread it, it didn't seem that way. Any way, I don't think it does.

Wikipedia wrote:
A single event is not enough to cause damage to the joint, although there is a hypothesis that prolonged joint stress due to cracking knuckles may eventually lead to a higher risk of joint damage. However, the long-term consequences of this practice have not been studied thoroughly, and the scientific evidence is inconclusive. The common parental advice "cracking your knuckles gives you arthritis" is not supported by any evidence, but habitual knuckle crackers are more likely to have hand swelling and lower grip strength.

I'm an insufferable twiddler; my fingers are generally in perpetual motion, always seeking something to do and explore. I drum and tap and flutter and snap. I do snap quite a lot, typically to the beat of whatever music happens to be running through my head at the moment. While sitting, it depends; if I am in a rocking chair, I normally tuck them under me; if I'm sitting for some other purpose, say at a meeting or something, I generally need something to be playing with; a pen works just fine, especially a clickable one. I have a green squishy ball that goes to most meetings with me too; I play catch with myself and roll it around and around between my hands, Tai Chi style. I also rub and pull my fingers and crack my knuckles a lot.

I suppose in some ways the movements of my fingers are somewhat expressive of my emotional state, not unlike a cat's tail.

Good fortune,

Mostly, my hands are relaxed. But when I'm writing, my left hand balls up in a fist; I'm not entirely sure why. And when I start thinking about the fact that I'm not doing anything with my hands, I get all self-conscious and my hands start doing all kinds of things in a futile attempt to arrange themselves like everyone else's.
