Aspies Who Come Into the Criminal Justice System
Quote:
The problem is that politicians and those who influence them do not want to provide more funding to prisons. Prisoners and people who work in prisons are aware of the problems with overcrowding, mental health issues, etc., but they can't even afford to hire enough doctors and nurses to take care of prisoners' physical ailments. The message is, "Send more people to prison for longer sentences and don't give the prisons any resources to deal with the population increase." No one even wants to look at reasons why crimes are committed; to do so is seen as being sympathetic to the criminals. Unfortunately, if these issues are never addressed, crime rates will only increase.
It's good for the economy. IMO, it is also disgusting.

There really NEEDS to be testing in prisons for learning disabilities/autism also! Someone in government should INSIST upon this!! The prisons are very overcrowded too. They are saying that 24% of prison population has a severe mental illness.. This was a year ago too, it's worse now! Here's a small quote from the article :
"I suspect if most of us spent much time in these places, we would all develop mental health "problems,'" Hamilton said.
If 24% get diagnosed with some kind of "mental illness", then they've thrown all objectivity overboard and are just inventing labels to match the prison population. Antisocial personality disorder and psychopathy isn't mental illness, it's criminal behaviour. People that commit crimes should be punished, they shouldn't get sent to some psychiatric facility. Any needed treatment is the individual's responsibility BEFORE he commits a crime. After he does, he should recieve the punishment he's got coming for him.
If Antisocial personality disorder and psychopathy are not mental health disorders, than why is it in the diagnostic criteria of mental disorders?
Here is the diagnostic criteria pdf file

I remember my mom and I once had a discussion and she said she thinks aspies should be able to follow laws and have difficulty breaking them. Her reason is because of their adherence to rules and taking things literal. She is correct so it boggles my mind why criminal behaviors would be blames on autism.
Lot of laws make sense anyway.

They are mental illnesses but the problem is mental illnesses are stigmatized and I guess people want personality disorders to be separate.

To me, it makes sense why they are group as mental disorders
Personality disorders are long-term patterns of behavior and inner experiences that differs significantly from what is expected. The pattern of experience and behavior begins by late adolescence or early adulthood and causes distress or problems in functioning. Without treatment, personality disorders can be long-lasting
To me it sounds like a mental disorder
I am sorry if I am wrong

The police officer who killed George Floyd may be on the spectrum actually! He was awkward socially, had poor people skills and was very strict and constricted in his behavior.
I sincerely hope this is not considered a mitigating factor.

I've heard that suggested, but like all historic figures it's mostly speculation (even if it's admittedly rather fun speculation). I'm pretty sure we'd agree he wouldn't get an 'autism pass' either. It's not like these men committed small transgressions caused by a failure to understand how their actions weren't socially acceptable.

Lot of laws make sense anyway.
It's one of the possibilities.
Another possibility is an Aspie growing up in a slightly law-breaking environment may get all the unspoken rules wrong.
BTW, my culture is very clear about distinction between laws and ethics.
