QUOTE:
Mark Blaxill (one of the kings of the mercury dads) coined the term "hidden horde" as a name for all the autistic adults that he says are not around and never been around.

Who IS this guy? Has he been out and interviewed every single member or every single community? Has he even done any original research? Nope. Thought not. What a tosser.

Of my large extended family about 2/3rds of people would qualify as AS (or, more rare: lower functioning autism).

Only two of us have such official labels because all the rest are so blisteringly intelligent that they earn shedloads of dosh or they're totally lacking insight into all their deficits and get on, blissfully ignorant and full of their own aspie rectitude! Everyone else is at fault! (C'mon guys, you know how we all get into this stuff... 8O !)

Thus none of them bother the government for public support. They never get counted and never will. My cousin and I drew the short straws!

More seriously, of course the count is much higher than the official one. King Mercury Dad is just trying desperately to build his legal case for massive $$compensation. We don't need folks like him on our team.

If on the other hand environment is a major factor in worsening autistic symptoms or genuinely increasing frequency of AS then it is as if those with genetically more susceptible systems are like subjects in a huge accidental experiment in what the human species can tolerate. What would it take to make governments take the environmental menace to human health and capacity seriously?

:? 8)

I use the word 'environmental' to include anything not genetic - so it would include behavioral and lifestyle factors (like sun exposure) as well as soaking up pollutants and toxins. But it does worry me - from heavy metals to endocrine disruptors to carcinogens and teratogens, there is a lot of bad stuff floating around that may be having some nasty effects.

Couldn't've put it better Inventor. Incidentially, in the UK we're working with a figure of 1 in 100. Of those somewhere between 75 - 95% are Aspergers/HFA

Thanks for the numbers. I have been here for a while, but facts are in short supply.

So our reputation is based on 5% to 25%, and so is the treatment.

How different it would be if it was based on the most functional 25%.

But we are not to learn how to be good at being us, what has worked for generations.

Some psychobabbling pill priest is to make a professional living turning us all into Auties.

After all, they got a Degree in dealing with the defective. Now they can wreck one of our lives in only twenty minutes.

Until it is us defining us, I will ignor it all.

They have no way of understanding who we are, how we think, and what we are good at.

We are not a problem in need of solution, we are a people.

I hold patents, write books, and have several businesses.

Anyone who would like to cure me should be warned, I will cure you first.

I am not the only one who has used AS/HFA skills to do well in life.

We will never join under the Psychobabble Banner,

but we could join to protect our own hard won freedom.
