well, I thought I had stopped by foreswearing future purchases until I made a ton of recipes from my current cookbooks but I bought a used copy of Beard on Bread after watching Martha but I am not buying Martha's Entertaining book. I have yet to make a decent loaf of sandwich bread.

That's what I told my mother!

Unfortunately, she has a point. Moving is such a pain when you have so many boxes of ridiculously heavy things. Why are books heavy? Bibliophiles typically aren't body builders. Physics is so counter-intuitive sometimes.

I'm a very anti-clutter kind of person, so my solution may be way off base, but... is it possible for you to pick a few at a time to part with, and take them to a used book store to trade in for different ones? You usually only get a couple bucks for each book, but still you can trade in 4 books, and get a "new" one. It should reduce the amount of books that you own, while still allowing you to get more books often, without breaking the bank.

I'm also anti-clutter, so I've tried that already (I don't consider books clutter, though). The economy failed me; no book store was able to pay me more than 1$ for each book, even though some were worth well over 40$. I don't understand why people don't like reading.

Not that they don't like reading, they're just being cheap since they want maximum profit and resale value is always less. They've probably lost a lot of business since ebay and amazon came along and don't want to risk losing money. Which makes it sound like you should turn to ebay or amazon yourself as people are advising.

We have this problem in our household...and we are cluttered..I come from a long line of book addicts...and I live with one. At one time while living on my own, I reached the point when living on my own that my books were seriously scaled down to my favorite art/music/poetry/comic/reference books and a few novels...even though it is my instinct to perpetually hoard as many books as I can get my hands on. I probably buy less than 3 books a year from the book store, but I am addicted to thrift shopping and the price range there is between a quarter and 50 cents...so we have a complete critical mass of books because they are so affordable. Anywhoo.....i don't know...I have thought about building a bomb shelter out of all the books perhaps...in such a way that the books are still accessable.

I'm seriously considering it. I haven't had any luck selling larger items on eBay, but this is something I could see working.

I used to be like that. My house is overflowing with books. I didn't collect them for art sake, I just couldn't help it. I still have spurts now and again, but my pocketbook suffered. For me it was either pay my bills or buy books, so I paid bills and discovered the library. And I tried to give away what I had already read too. I didn't have much luck there.

So yeah, I'm no help.

It you want more books, you can have them. There all over scattered near my desk.

I think that washing my hands is great, but some people over-do it. They call that OCD.

Wow. You sir, impress me. Incidentally, have you heard of shelves? They are an absolutely wonderful invention used for the storage and easy access of literary materials, such as books.
I've just finished re-shelving and organizing mine. I had to buy another bookcase.

I used to have that problem. Then I moved into a smaller place, and was forced to get rid of half my books because I didn't have space for them all anymore. Then I moved into an even Smaller place than that, and had to get rid of more of then, etc. Now I'm down to 1 bookcase of books, and it's probably going to collapse soon.

Here's a nice charity that might be able to use some of your books:
http://www.forgenow.org/how/book_drive.html

Run a Book Drive

One of the ways that FORGE receives funding is through the hard work of college students across the country who run book drives. To run these book drives, FORGE partners with Books for Africa (www.BooksForAfrica.org) and Better World Books (www.betterworldbooks.com), who provides supplies, support, planning, packaging, shipping, and marketing expertise for the drive.

The students who run the drives find success when they start early in the quarter/semester and recruit a dependable group of friends to help support the drive. The number of people you’ll need on your team depends on the size of your campus.

After marketing the drive with materials provided by BWB, book collection begins when students begin selling books during finals. You’ll set up collection boxes across the campus and direct fellow students to support your drive by giving their unwanted books. At the end of the quarter/semester, your team will package the books into boxes provided by BWB and a shipping company will come pick them up and bring them to BWB. FORGE receives funds for each qualifying book.

Running a book drive is a great way to learn about grassroots fundraising for non-profits and provides experience in leading and managing a team in pursuit of a goal.

Interested in running a book drive to benefit FORGE? Contact [email protected], and remember – the earlier you start in the quarter/semester, the better off your drive will be.
