Echolalia just means repeating things you don't understand. I was very echolalic when was little. I learned things but didn't understand them. I had a rote memory too but didn't understand the meaning of them.

It doesn't have to be not understanding. It just means repeating what someone else has said, either immediate or delayed. Some autistic people use it (with full comprehension of what they are saying) as a form of communication, and some do it without comprehension.

Oftentimes I will playback what someone says, in my head, to understand what they just said. Is that echolalia? Didn't know it was anything, until I read this thread. : )

i didn't notice it until i had kids. i repeat what they say about 80% of the time. i'd like to think it helped them learn to talk well faster. but i do it without thinking. it just happens.

and a large amount of my everyday speech is borrowed from movies, books, tv shows, etc..

my 4yo eats pasta a lot. every time i prepare it i'll say, "pasta la vista, bebe" several times.

I don't know if it's echolilia or not but I tend to often repeat the end phrase of a joke back to people telling it, sometimes in slightly different words. This really kills the joke, unfortunately.

Mine is really subtle....I don't even know if it counts.

at the risk of being really annoying, here is a video in which (flakey and I are really drunk)...but I seem to exhibit a little bit of what I think is echolalia....please stop the video before I make the annoying and embarrasing squeaking sound....I "Echo" Flakey twice at the beginning...(you would do yourself wise to stop the video after the second time at around 21 seconds) does it count as echolalia? If it does, I do it kind of alot..but not as a rule...the annoying sounds I make at around 23 seconds are examples of vocal stims I have...I say Doh doh doh....alll the time.....
