How were you raised as a child?
I was raised in a very strict, emotionally cold family. My physical needs (e.g. food, shelter, and clothes) were generally well-met, but my emotional needs were largely ignored. My parents even told me that I'm supposed to earn their love, not get it "for free" simply because I exist. Also, my every move was strictly monitored and criticized. And let's not even bring up how my parents checked my school grades.
Come to think of it, I felt like Lincoln Six Echo in that underground compound from the movie The Island. Except I didn't even have the benefit of going to the Island (and honestly, I wouldn't have cared that there was no Island). I just knew that I wasn't happy.
i was only child until age of 13 so i have been keeped in arms guide lot but im not spoilet:) and after they discovered that i got as..in age of 6 they acsually still sometimes keeped me restained in stroller at age of 9
..that was time of my emonational tantrums

My parents spoiled me with material things but didn't really make an effort to get to know me or understand me, thus I found myself alone more often than not. They expected me to follow a strict schedule of what I should do in my life and so, in turn, I found myself having to do so many things that I did not want to do and was not equipped to do because of the AS.
Later on, in my twenties, I sent an email to my mother trying to tell her that I have AS and she basically just ignored me completely and suggested I speak to a professional.
I think my parents think I am a failure in life because I do not meet their standards of NT perfection.
Oh well...I don't care what they think about me any more. ![]()
I was cared a lot by my parents but I wasn't spoiled with stuff. My parents always took my brothers and I out to places and we always went on trips while the kids in our neighborhood didn't but were allowed to be mean and be bullies and they got all the stuff they wanted, one of them did.
I was treated the same as my brothers because they didn't want me to be all confused and think there was something wrong with me.
My parents made mistakes with me yes but have always tried working with me and trying to understand and my mother took classes so she could learn how to be a better parent and how she could teach me since my mind worked differently than normal kids, and she did the same method to my brothers just so I wouldn't feel I was broken.
When she would teach me thins, she sometimes involved my brothers too. My brother talked early because whenever Mom was saying words to me, he was always around so he picked up on it. he was even saying big words like Hippopotamus at one years old.
I grew up in a house where dad worked (nuclear engineer) and my mom stayed at home with me and my sister. I was very fortunate to have many material posessions and grow up in a stable, middle-high income household where typically me and my sis always got what we wanted.
My father always worked, hes like 10X the aspie I am, and my mom cleaned the house constantly and was very nurturing towards me and my sis while dad was.... well... not so much.
I am very thankful for the wonderful life (for the most part) that I had, I love my parents very much and see them regularly, i live 20 mins away from them. I think that was very helpful as far as getting by in school sure I was weird and a nerd, but because of the neghboorhood I lived in, very upperclass comapired to the rest of the area, I was treated maby a little better then someone else with AS coming from any other family outside of the estate's I grew up in.

DX'ed with HFA as a child. However this was in 1987 and I am certain had I been DX'ed a few years later I would have been DX'ed with AS instead.
I was, at various points, treated like a gifted child, treated like a very disabled child in need of protecting, etc. Sometimes indulged, sometimes normal level of strictness, sometimes very strict, sometimes left alone. Fairly often made (whether this was intended or not) to fulfill other people's dreams or images of me, which later made me very confused about who I was for a little while (although that's pretty normal in adolescence too).

Learned to stop seeking love at an early age, and therefore probably count as a loner.
Me too.

My parents were recluses, themselves; my father keeping to himself and his intellectual pursuits, my mother keeping to herself and her emotional dilemmas. That's not to say they ignored me, but they understood that I needed at least as much space as they did. They were there for support and neither spoiled nor controlled me.
Today, they are drunken fragments of the people I once knew. I don't know what happened, but I'm glad I was raised before it happened.

My parents divorced when I was 4 or 5. My Dad moved away. My mum did shelter me a bit from the world. I thought this was because she was a Christian, but it had more to do with me being autistic. She didn't know it at the time but she always thought there was something different about me. She got scolded by my older sister for doing that too.
I remember being left at home on my own at around 8 years old. My mum worked and my brothers and sisters would be out with their friends.
I struggled a bit in school, so my mum home schooled me for year 6. A year later I went back to school but barely lasted a year there.
I guess I am a mummy's girl. I don't mind.
I always missed my dad and would be jealous of the kids with both parents in their lives.
I was raised in a children's home - 6 months old to 10 years-old.
Then went to live with my mainly NT grandma and slightly Aspier mother - both were nice but my mum was a bit detached/hands-off - though not in a cold way, she had a good heart.
My long-time comorbiities (anxiety, depression) were always attributed to my being raised outside the family.
And until I discovered my AS, I bought into that.
And to an extent, I'm sure it impacted my psychology - but nothing like the way AS does.
What more can I tell you ?
I grew up as the youngest child, but I don't think this have to do anything about AS. That thing is allready in your brain, regardless on how, or who raised you. It's your own god damned thing, child. You got to live with that!

I was the youngest of 5 children and was by necessity, a loner. When all the others were at school, I was at home alone with my mother, and I learned how to play by myself, which I preferred over my siblings. We didn't go out and play with kids in the neighborhood because there were a couple my parents didn't trust, so we stayed in all the time. I never played with kids outside the family until I was 6 years old and went to school.
My siblings always treated me like I was inferior to them because I was the youngest. They said I was always wrong no matter what, not because of facts, because whatever I said was wrong because I said it. They even said I was born to be wrong. I was also clumsy, so they made fun of me for that as well. One of my brothers, who was 10 years older than me, often yelled at me and physically abused me, with his favorite thing being arm twisting. I told my parents and they did nothing. I still remember when he left for college, I was so happy because once he was gone, he could no longer hurt me.
My sister and I went to separate schools, which was a good thing, since I could have a place where I could matter, where I had some respect because I was a good student. Then my parents trasferred me to the same school my sister went to, which was totally different. Being a good student academically was something that got me ridiculed there, plus not being athletic, which didn't matter at the other school, also was held against me. In addition, my sister would get her friends to pick on me and even when I told our parents, they did nothing since they dind't believe she could do anything bad. In addition, I always got dragged to her football games and parades since she played in the band. I hated all that noise and sometimes being out in the cold.
After that, I bounced through multiple schools, where I was often picked on, with 8th grade being the absolute worst. During that same time, my parents got on a kick where I had learn to swim and to love swimming, so whenver my sister went into the pool, I was mandated to join her. She liked this because she used it to control me or to punish me when I didn't do what she said. In my parent's eyes, because I didn't hold swimming as something sacred and holy, I was nothing. Being forced into a pool daily when I wanted to do othing things was absolutely horrible.
When I got to high school, the forced swimming stopped, but I was forced into a very clannish Christian school where all the students were either members of the same churches or gone to the same elementary schools and since I wasn't part of that, I was marginalized there as well. My parents wouldn't transfer me out of there in spite of the horrible treatment I was getting, even though they'd transferred my sister out of other schools for less than I what I had to endure.
I used to place alot of the blame on my sister because there were a couple of times, in high school and in college, where she didn't live with us, and the treatment I got from my parents was totally different. They let me be and do my own thing in peace. When sis came back, that went by the wayside and it was back to the way it was. I place alot of the blame on my parents now because part of the reason they treated me that way was to keep my sister happy, to keep her self esteem up, etc. They should have shown some spine with her, since they had no trouble, and in fact quite enjoyed, laying down the law to me, punishing me for vague reasons, etc. If my sister had been put in her place a long time ago instead of being put on a pedastal, she woudn't have been the way she was.
