In my opinion it is the woman that had the problem.

I sometimes point to stuff at work, simply because I don't have the time to walk all over the place to show people where everything is.

Is this a very high end store with "snooty" customers? I think this woman wanted to show her superiority over the little employee by blasting you for not following a protocol (of bringing her to the object) that she was no doubt aware of. She has probably done similar things to others in the store.

We are so often viewed as inappropriate by NT's that we often don't know when it is them and not us at all who are at fault. I suspect that that is the case here.

Ask your co-workers. I bet they have had problems with the witch as well.

I've worked in customer service for years and I've found that sometimes, people think since they're the customer and you can't defend yourself without being abrasive, they take it as an opportunity to take all their garbage out on you. And if you don't respond just like they want you to, which could mean anything, they'll complain to your supervisor to get you in trouble. I've learned to always be super-nice to customers so whenever they want to cause trouble, my manager knows I didn't do anything wrong and takes my side.

Unless I'm on my job, I don't worry all that much about seeming impolite to people because their rules always seem to change and are rather arbitrary. Besides, I'm like this, I've survived all these years being intentionally harassed by NTs so they can certainly live with my little bitty social flubs.
That's what I meant above, but you said it better.

Hmm... apparently it is rude to point at people, but I didn't know objects were such an issue... what, did the tin of baked beans get offended?

My advice? Learn sign language: you are EXPECTED to point! :D
