I have received comments from members that they had no idea that anyone with autism would not want a cure.

We don't have to stand against Autism Speaks. We can speak civily within Autism Speaks.[/quote]

Here's the problem:
The people on the Autism Speaks message board are not actually representatives of Autism Speaks. The Autism SPeaks organization has been knowingly sending misinformation about autism to the general public through PR blitzes and television ads.

Worst case scenarios make a bigger impact.

Same reason the news generally shows what's going wrong with the world, not what's gone right.

Just sensationalism.

it's not just the sensationalism. It's the misrepresentation of autism under the guise of science. It's great that an organization is funding scientific research. I have nothing wrong with that. I do have a big problem with movies like "autism everyday" which use statistics like 1 in 150 but misleadingly imply that most of the 1 in 150 are low functioning. That kind of thing is abominable.

The whole concept simply doesn't make sense to me. Autism isn't a disease; a pathogen that you can kill and cure yourself of. The entire notion of curing autism seems based on a misunderstanding.

You can't "cure" brain structure.

We know that.

Many of the forum members there don't actually like the organization.

Only one (whom I like, by the way) actually gives them her money.

It would be cool if there were a Pied Piper who, declared, since the world doesn't want autistic spectrum people, I'm taking them somewhere else. I think that creativity would stagnate and there would be no more good research and cool inventions.

Then Autism Speaks would change their focus to try and "cure" NTs and turn them geeky.

So far, and in my oponion, everyone here is right.

The stakes here are huge. If a "genetic marker" is found before the truth of autism - specifically that some of us actually like ourselves as we are - gets out, a genocide is likely.

A genocide? An extermination of all autistic people?

I need that one explained.

Autism Speaks supports eugenics and a prenatal test.

Selective abortions based upon detection of the genetic marker(s) could stop a new generation from being born.

I think he meant a "watch for the marker test and abort the fetus", rather than a "round them up into camps and gas the no good bastards" type of genocide. I think they'd have a helluva time trying to accomplish it. It'd be a b***h if we crashed all their computers and nobody answered when they called tech support....

Okay. So, can we document these things and bring them to the people on the Autism Speaks message board?

Oh. Since you used to term genocide I thought you were referring to people, not fetuses.

Genocide by any means removes a select group from the world and from the genetic pool.

Kind of odd, because it's happened with a lot of other conditions that start in childhood (blindness, etc).
