...Again repeating , I realize I have neither the degree nor the " skills " for the Peace Corps , I guess Americorps - more likely the VISTA division - would be the one to go for .
I lived in WI for a while , hey , my justification for addressing this to you...

I was in the Peace Corps in Tonga from 1984 to 1986.

I also worked as an itinerant English teacher in Asia for some time after that.

I knew a guy who joined Americorps. He said whatever you don't join it because he was trying to get out it was so bad. He said the guys pick fights every night and he was constantly having to physically defend himself every night. And he said every night there was always a girl getting raped in her bunk. Its nothing but a place for trashy people to go; its not really a do-gooders club like the media makes it sound.

...I see what you're saying .
I think I may have had - you??????? - someone say like that to me hhere when I brought this up here before , or , at another board .
Do you think they're all like that ?
Yes , I can see where some judges might've been doing a variant of the old " Join the Army or go to jail " thing .
There are 3 Americorps -
www.americorps.org
AC NCCC involves 18-24-yr-olds living in dorms , in specific places .
There is " Local " AC , and VISTA AC . Do you think they're all like that ?????????
Frankly , the " do-gooder's club " more or less , thing is what attracted me .

...Again , I have thought about doing it .
I don't think the Peace Corps is an option , again , since I don't have either a BA/graduate's degree , nor do I have " skills " as such .
I am thinking the VISTA Americorps takes people of all ages , and sends them away .
There's the " local " Americorps , too , but it appears to me more for younger people ( I'm 48 . )...and , might have this " alternative to going to jail " problem with the membership that Ticker spoke about .
( I'm rather a - materially speaking - failure . I'm an " overaged college student " -a aspiringly . )

My close friend is in Americorps, but in order for me to join I need a car to get downtown.
