I have palilalia. According to my mom it used to be really bad when I was younger. I didn't even realize I was doing it until my brother pointed it out one day. Sometimes I catch myself doing it when I pray, and sometimes it happens when I talk to someone while I'm excited or upset.

Me too! :)
I sometimes do it when I'm around my parents or someone else I'm comfortable with.

when i was younger and people use to ask me questions i wouldn't understand what they said. so i would respond with "what?" then i would repeat what they said quietly. only then would i understand, and respond, usually just as they begin repeating the question.

it would annoy the hell out of them, and they usually thought i was trying to make them mad.

idk if this is echolalia, but it would make sense.

engelbert humperdink makes me think of a dark grey, with a slight pukey green tinge.

I have a related question: can somebody have just palilalia or echolalia and nothing else, or are these conditions always secondary to another one (like Tourette's or AS)?

I've never seen it in a NT, but it sould be possible, I would think so. Allbeit rare.

Yet another thing I do that I'm finding out most other people don't. I do both all the time, but until now I had no idea that was abnormal or that it even had a name. Funny thing is my mostly NT but slightly Aspie dad does it verbally far more than I do. If he thinks something is funny or clever, he'll repeat it 3 or 4 times. And he also whispers while rehearsing conversations. Most of the time I can hear what the entire "conversation" is about and will throw in a relating comment or question to his embarassment.

If repeating something funny of clever is Echolalia, then I must do it a LOT more than I realised. Verbally, what's more. O.o I didn't think that was Echolalia, but I'm not sure.

Another thing I remember is that my friend in primary school noticed something. When she or I spoke, I would often move my lips just slightly, but she could never quite lip-read what I was saying. I know now, but didn't at the time, that that was echolalia/palilalia.

I have a friend that repeats questions that he is asked, without fail. No other signs of AS or anything. It used to drive his ex nuts, but it didnt bother me. For a joke, I would repeat it a third time.

His Ex: Do you want to go uptown?

Friend: Do I want to go uptown?

Me: does he want to go uptown?

HAHA.

palilalia, couldn't they name it something different? That's just a problem right there... palilalia

I actually go to bed repeating a word or phrase in my head and when I wake up in the morning, before I'm even fully awake, I realize that I am still repeating the same thing and it feels like I have been repeating it all night in my sleep. I feel exhausted from it.

QUESTION: Do you ever do something and then a few minutes later wonder if you are just remembering what you just did or if you have actually done that before? (not deja vu)

(Tourette's)
I used to repeat things in my head over and over and over and just think it was normal so it never bothered me. Was just slightly annoying but never thought too much about it. Now that I have been researching tourettes again and found that this was a part of tourettes I pay attention to it and it seems to happen more. Not really, I just pay attention now.

I replay and repeat phrases in my head quite often. This happens with songs and conversations, too.

I think I'm just prone to repetition. :D

And palilia is basically the same thing as echolalia, except that you repeat a word, a phrase, or sentence that you yourself just said. I do this a lot as well.

I do that! But I have never known what it is or why I do it, just that it drives people mad lol. I also repeat the same question over and over even if I have already been given the answer. Is that the same thing?

I have never come across the term palilia before, I just thought it was an annoying habit I have.

I repeat things that people say to clarify what it is that they said, and to stall while I think of my response.

Also, sometimes, I replay past events in my head. Sometimes this includes saying the things that were said in a discussion out loud. I tend to do it the most with things that I said or things that someone else said that were very significant to the events. Like when I say something very funny, or when someone says something very rude, or when someone says something that starts a fight or when someone says something w/ a lot of emotion. I am almost always alone when I do this, but sometimes I do it when I forget that I'm not alone and someone else is nearby. I think it is just a way of entertaining myself when I am bored.

this sums me up...i didn't know there was a term for it? mostly a phrase will repete(?) a sentance over and over, and i will tell myself to stop and forcefuly try to think of something else and i get 2 thoughts going at the same time till the repete runs its course

Rewind. Play. Rewind. Play.

Dang ... another Aspie trait. Always when I'm alone or at least think I'm alone. Wife busted me once: "Who are you talking to?" Me: "I wasn't saying anything." I don't think she bought it.
