Oscuria, have been learning to compartmentalize them, by any chance? A wise person once told me to do just that...I've been trying.

Compartmentalize emotions? How would I do that? Surround myself with sensory motivators that will react a certain emotion? Or just think of such an emotion until it comes to me, then move on to the next in increments?

I've been speaking with a psychologist who said I think too much (analyze) which prevents me from feeling emotions. She tried to have me experience my emotions (or at least recall). It didn't work. In the end she got tired of it and said "We'll pick it up next time."

If I remember correctly, this person said something like "imagine compartments and put your emotions in there so it doesn't affect you." Good advice, but only for the overly emotional.

If you're not feeling enough, or as much as you think you should, then it's pretty uselss, though. Just a thought.

That's the thing, I don't know if I am feeling an emotion or not. It's rather strange. My senses are a bit skewed. For example, and it may be the case for the many of you, if I am eating something the smell of the food will drive away the taste, if I am listening to loud music my sense of smell will go away, if I'm surrounding by loud noise I will lose sight or smell, temporarily.

That's interesting. I've never met someone who said something like that before...

Funny, whenever we are in a crisis or when someone has passed away, then I have a hard time "feeling" or grasping any emotion. It seems as though i do not care, but I do, i understand perfectly what is going on, its just that i have a hard time having emotions. However, as much as i try, when i am angry, i have a hard time not saying vicious things that i do not mean. I am afraid to tell anyone about my lack of empathy because i don't want people to assume that i am a cold-hearted person.

I'm wondering how many people here lack or struggle with emotions?

I've been noticing that I'm not intune with my emotions to the point where I won't realize that I was feeling something until after the event. Whenever something happens, my mind quickly shuts it out.

I've accept that I've no empathy, but I am beginning to believe I've no sympathy as well. I ask myself "Why should I be bothered by what he/she is going through?" The closest thing to sympathy I have is trying to figure out how to make things better, but in those times, victims care not for correcting situations but on making themselves feel better (at least from what I've experienced). I am not good with that. I will laugh, smile, or be in my own world.

I've rationalized my lack of sympathy because I feel no one deserves to be pitied. I rationalized my lack of empathy because I can never experience what another person is feeling. I've yet to discover why I cannot understand my emotions, why I seem to not realize that I am sad, angry, happy, etc. until told that I look like I am.

For a long time I thought I had no emotions but I've come to realize that I'm just afraid of them. They're hard to
So again, anyone out there with similar feelings/thoughts?

I thought I didn't have emotions for the longest time. Then I realized that I'm just afraid of them. I repressed them and ignored them because they're hard to understand and even harder to turn off. Its only recently that I've begun to realize what's going on inside my head.

I'm a bit lacking in empathy and sympathy, but I make up for them intellectually (I don't know if I do a good job with that).
I can suppress ordinary emotions as long as they aren't very strong, except anger and sometimes anxiety. Apparently I don't show much emotion, or I always look angry/sad/whatever, depending on the person. Also when people around me are panicking, I can stay quite calm, at least externally.

Recently I've noticed that when I think I'm not feeling anything, I really feel frustrated, happy, or some other not-so-strong emotion.

Early on in life, I noticed my inability to sympathize/empathize, and felt somewhat guilty for it.

I've never cried at a funeral, or even over death of even family. I was always taught by my family that when people die, they go to a better place, so even at 7 and 10 years old with the deaths of my beloved grandparents, I couldn't understand why so many people were so sad. My thoughts were "If [the deceased] is in heaven now, then I shouldn't cry but be happy for them. If my parents really believe the things they told me, they shouldn't cry either." I just never understood it. Doesn't do any good when any of my close friends are upset either; I'm utterly useless for comfort short of giving them a hug and just listening to them; and I never say anything like "Every thing's going to be okay" without a logical basis for thinking that'd be the most likely outcome.

by other peoples standerds I have a emotional problems and by the dr's thoughts I have emotional problems .so I guess I have emotional problems. I do not lack empathy and sympathy, I just show it diffrently. I use to have problems with anger. And my dr thinks it is abnormal for a human to have not cryed since the age of 10. I think we all exparence emotions diffrentley and that is not a bad thing. we all are just diffrent, and that is ok! no matter who you are.

When my grandpa and cousin died I didn't drop a tear in each of their funerals, I wasn't happy but I didn't cry either while all others dropped a tear at least. I always found that creepy in myself.

I don't have any problems feeling emotions, but I have problems trying to verbalize my emotions to others. Like for example my mom has been hurting a lot the past month and it's taking a toll on her. I can't say, "I'm sorry you're hurting Mom." or "I'm glad you're getting better." But I still feel sorry for her and it hurts me to see her in pain.
