Maybe there should be a vote on it. If sean feels that is neccesary then we should see what the general consensus is but i dont think "mild" sexual issues, suicide or violence should be discussed in family-friendly areas. They should be left to the mature forum. Any kids that are affected by these issues will look in the mature forum anyway.

It wouldn't be intended to be a completely family friendy forum. Just a forum for serious issues not suitable for most younger kids yet more suitable for teens than the existing mature forum, as well as serving as a way of seperating meaningful, AS-related discussion from most of the stuff in the existing mature forum right now.

Thats ok. See when you click on the post reply button. Just above the white box that you write in there are options like font size and font colour. There is tiny letters right up to huge, just choose whatever one you want.

I still dont see the need. Should we try and seperate other forums into stuff we find meaningful and AS related or not? I cant see it working.

Do you see a problem with topics that could have a driect benefit on or even save somene's life, such as the suicide thread, being lost in a bunch of fart jokes and sex advice?

I think you have a good point. The sexual stuff is generally reffered to
as "adult" and other serious issues such as suicide are considered "mature." They really have little in common other than the fact that they are unsuitable topics for young children.

Perhaps rather than creating yet another sub-section that is 'out of bounds' to some people, why not have a policy of rigorous 'reapering' in the mature forum, so that the imbecilic fluff gets squashed before it starts to characterise that section of the forums?

If the salacious stuff was deleted, then the character of the mature section would alter so that people would be more inclined to use it for important issues that may not be suitable for a broader audience.

Even as an older person, I am very aware of the fact that it could look fairly 'restricting' to younger people, to be told that there are multiple sections that are inappropriate for them. It is also worth remembering that there are probably more younger people on here than us older ones so theoretically, there should be more of it blocked off to us than to them.

hmmmm. i'm not terribly happy with the idea of deleting posts in general, as it can be like censorship. also, who gets to decide which threads are "worthy" and which are not?

i also think that, for many people, WP is the only place where they can indulge in "sexual chit chat", which many other people can do with their friends in real life. i think that's healthy, providing the posts keep to the guidelines (i.e., nothing explicit, pronographic or exploitative). it may seem fluffy or trivial, but sex and sexuality are part of most people's lives, even if that sexuality is asexuality, if that makes sense.

however, i do see sean's point. i do wonder if a "serious" forum would prove too tempting for some of our more... "lighthearted" members...?

Yes, that does make sense, as it is a means of including everyone whether or not they actually are a part of it.

The point I was making was that if this kind of material is detrimental to people's willingness or feeling of ability to post more 'weighty' issues, then in some respects, it can be quite destructive.

I thought there was Censorship though. I would think there would have to be, considering that strongly held, controversial views could be taken as offensive by some people. Also, I have seen interventions in posts to remove content that some people may deem offensive, especially if there are potential legal repercussions, for example, organisations such as the CRE.

posts which are very offensive or illegal are removed, this is true (doesn't happen very often), in accordance with the guidelines. however, my interpretation of what you described involved the sort of censorship (my definition of the word) which is far more subjective, and involves deleting content because someone thinks it isn't serious enough (for example).

i don't like censorship, unless it blatantly contravenes common standards of what is appropriate.

Is it really all that vital that we keep things morbid in there? I mean, what are the chances that there would be someone who never uses the search feature and who would miraculously be turned away from suicide by reading something in the suicide thread, but instead they missed it because of the jokes (which really aren't out of control)? This isn't a suicide message board, this is an AS community.

I don't know just how close anyone that posted about suicide was to doing it at the time, but it definitely has helped some people, which is the purpose of WP.

Maybe you are right. I dont know about the legal stuff but people under tha age of consent have suicidal feelings also so maybe it would be healthy for them to have another forum to discuss these besides the mature forum.
