For me it was a relief...I wasn't crazy, nuts, wacked...or all those countless names people called me when they couldn't understand why I was the way I was.

I stopped laying the almighty guilt-trip on myself when I tried so hard...but I just couldn't live up to the expectations of others.

After I got past the initial anger...I started to accept who I am and how I am.

I just wish I would have known a long time ago.

it changes the course of therapy. i'm not trying to cure myself, but what good is repeatedly trying to correct behaviors the wrong way?
an as diagnosis gives me a better shot at finding the kind of help that is useful to me.

i don't want/need to change who i am. but i do need to learn how to take care of myself.

eta: and it's a big f**k you to everyone who made me miserable over the years. they were all barking up the wrong trees in the wrong damn forest.

For myself it was a relief. There was something hugely disconcerting about being hopelessly oblivious and being alone with it. Knowing I'm not alone has helped and knowing other people got through okay with the same problems would have been a huge help before. I could well have had a much better life if I had that kind of information sooner.

Still I don't know how I'd feel if someone had spontaneously told me they thought I had it. On the plus side they could drop anvils to lead me to looking into it myself and I doubt I'd realise what was going on.

short answer; it explains the 'why' of why I am this way...
